The new gameplay trailer for Hitman: Absolution shows off iO Interactive’s new “Contracts” mode. This mode allows you to setup custom Contract assassination missions for you to share with friends. Players will be allowed to cycle through levels and selecting up to three people from the NPCs on the board to target as Contract Kills.
Gamers will then be able to compete based on time, style and witnesses. Square Enix plans to have a few Contract Missions available on launch.
As much as console gamers love online multiplayer as a bonus to a strong single-player campaign, nobody wants to play another rehashed version of Deathmatch – leave that for Call of Duty, Halo, Medal of Honor or any number of shooters that have strong existing communities.
However, if you as a developer can come up with a truly unique experience then why not put it in.
This week at Gamescom, Square Enix and iO Interactive announced a new “Contracts” mode in Hitman: Absolution. In this mode, gamers will be able to create custom missions to share with the community. If an online player decides to take your “Contract”, he or she will be rewarded based on how well they complete the objectives you set. They will also earn contract dollars, which can be used to unlock additional weapons or create more elaborate contract missions.
Christian Elverdam, Gameplay Director on Hitman: Absolution stated: “Contracts was inspired by our loyal and extremely creative fans, many of whom are still finding new and amazing ways of taking out targets in previous Hitman games.”
It’s a smart add-on to the game, one which I can already see loyal fans spending hours building up custom missions. This mode’s success will be dependent on how robust iO Interactive designs the mode. If gamers really have the ability to create a wide-range of scenarios, where no two are alike – then this will be an instant win. However, if the only difference between contract setups boil down to completion time and witnesses, then it will be a major missed opportunity for iO to establish something truly unique.

The latest trailer for Naughty Dog’s upcoming adventure, The Last of Us, is a remixed cut of previous trailers and in-game cinematic clips, with a few new action sequences and dialogue moments.
The trailer, unveiled this week at Gamescom, will definitely get you psyched for the new Naughty Dog shooter. It also hints at a fair amount of intrigue and back story with the leading character. Also, the use of Hank Williams “Alone and Forsaken” as the music bed, builds up a nice gritty contrast to the action that unfolds. It’s reminiscent of Kurt Sutter’s style on Sons of Anarchy.

Square-Enix has just released a new trailer from Gamescom. Gun Loco is the new third-person shooter for Xbox 360. The game revolves around a group of escaped convicts on a prison planet at the far corners of solar system. The characters appear to be cliche stereotypes of criminals, with a rock and roll style. One character has a bunny head and human body. The trailer doesn’t reveal much about the game. However, Gun Loco appears to be a title that will be multiplayer intensive – possibly like Dead Rising 2. Also, judging by the name, we should expect a wide variety of creative weapons.
It seems Square-Enix is really focused on promoting its offerings beyond the realms of RPGs this year. In 2010, seen a few new titles come out testing the realms of sandbox games and third person shooters including Just Cause 2 and Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days.
