There was a time when teen adventures at Mystic Falls High School were great to watch. But those times ended somewhere along the course of The Vampire Diaries’ second season.
Nowadays, activities inside the walls of Mystic Falls High generally signify an interim episode. Most of the real drama takes place when the vamps are free to show their fangs, without worry of being spotted by trite humans. And seriously, who needs teen doldrums anyway when you’re an immortal?
In “Bring it On,” we got to see a different kind of Elena. She shut off her emotions thanks to Damon’s sire-bond request. Instead of mourning the loss of Jeremy, she’s living her undead-life as a carefree – and utterly careless – vampire. Speaking of Jeremy, Steven McQueen is still listed in the opening credits so we may indeed see him return when Silas has his reckoning.
As for Elena, she’s become quite the bitch. Not only did she defy Damon’s request to not feed in public, she also let Caroline fall during a cheerleading toss. Ouch. Once Damon turned off her emotions, he also turned off the sire bond. Apparently, since the sire bond was formed from her love for Damon, an emotionless Elena also won’t share the bond. Does that mean Stelena is back on? Not in the least bit. Elena may have been teasing Stefan with some nudity, but Damon still knows how to show her the best blood-sucking time of the two Salvatores. However, she did let Stefan know one last time that the sex was always good.
Unfortunately for the Forbes family, Elena’s biggest atrocity wasn’t dropping Caroline. Elena also attacked Sheriff Forbes. The emotionless vampire later tried to stab Caroline when the sheriff’s daughter came to the rescue.
Although Elena was causing petty, vamp crimes in “Bring it On,” her escapades didn’t quite measure up to some of the past TVD story arcs. This episode serves to introduce the final story arc that will take us into the finale.
Here are some of the highlights:
– Silas is running around stealing blood bags from every hospital surrounding Mystic Falls.
– Haley is working for Klaus or rather sleeping with Klaus. It was nice to see Klaus finally having a good time. Sometimes he gets as melodramatic as Stefan. Klaus revealed that Haley’s wolf pack was from Louisiana.
– Tyler is still on the run, but he’s left his house to Matt so that Caroline has protection.
– Kat apparently has a network of spies running errands for her. We still don’t understand Kat’s motives for killing Jeremy, taking the cure and ultimately freeing Silas. One of Kat’s spies was an old friend of Damon’s from the 70s.
Usually we get about two filler episodes before the plot shifts in a new direction. In episode 4.17, Damon and Elena head to New York. Unless we actually see Silas in action, the story will probably focus more on building up our fear of this new threat. Bonnie still has to conduct one more mass murder to unleash “all hell” on the world. So that will probably be the signal for the start of the Season 4 end game.
