Who doesn’t love a good gangster film?
The Godfather, Casino, Scarface and Carlito’s Way are just a few of the gangster movies that made organized crime cool. They gave birth to the fan favor for TV shows like The Sopranos, The Wire, Boardwalk Empire and Breaking Bad.
However, those films belonged to the now legendary age of Brian De Palma and Martin Scorsese. It’s been a while since we’ve had a director deliver a gangster movie that deserves a spot on the DVD/Blu-ray shelf with De Palma or Scorsese.
Now, Ruben Fleischer is staking his claim on contemporary crime movies with Gangster Squad. The featurette shows off turf wars galore. Also, if you’re a fan of Carlito’s Way, you’ll want to see Sean Penn back in the gangster world. He’s a Brooklyn-born kingpin who takes over Los Angeles in 1949 (somehow, I imagine that to be my life story).
Nick Nolte and Josh Brolin round out the cast with grit, while Ryan Gosling adds in more flashy, Hollywood gloss.
Although this film is far from a comedy, there are moments in the featurette that are stylistically reminiscent to Harlem Nights – just with a lot more action.
Gangster Squad hits theaters January 11th, 2013.
