Supernatural Episode 8.04 gave us our first major filler episode of Season 8. Most of the episode followed around three teenagers – Brian, Kate and Michael – as they filmed a personal documentary. Although Sam and Dean made a few “cameos” throughout “Bitten,” they hardly got any airtime. Perhaps Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles requested a little R&R from production?
The werewolf escapades culminated in three deaths and a fourth werewolf, Kate, who was given a temporary pardon by the Winchester Brothers. After finishing Brian’s video diary of the group’s fall from grace, she promised to live off of animal hearts. “Bitten” closed with Kate walking off into the sunset so she’ll probably resurface somewhere down the line.
While the episode was mostly filler, it did serve a singular purpose. Throughout Dean’s hunter career, he has always tried to keep himself emotionally detached from the personal journeys of those who turned into monsters. Bobby’s transformation into a ghost/poltergeist was a wake-up call for Dean, before he got zapped into purgatory. The teen wolf documentary, however, gave Dean a chance to see three teens make the transition from fun-loving college co-eds into monsters. The condensed video helped him to understand (or remember) that monsters are sometimes ordinary people who are really victims.

The Setup: Michael and Brian are secretly filming the Winchesters, who are currently undercover as FBI agents, at night.
Michael whispers to Brian, “Is it just me or are you getting a workplace romance vibe from those two.”
Later on, after Brian films Sam and Dean killing the professor, Brian states that he agrees the two agents definitely have a secret love.
Brian always felt like Michael’s number two. He made a Lord of the Flies reference when comparing himself to Michael. “I’m sick of being piggy. I want to be Ralph.”
In the closing scene, Dean asks, “Sam, do I really say awesome a lot?”
