October is finally here and all things horror can crawl out of the dark corners including The Walking Dead in less than two weeks. Season 3 begins on October 14 and we’ll be introduced properly to Michonne (Danai Gurira), the Governor (David Morrissey) and the prison where Rick (Andrew Lincoln) and the other survivors attempt to seek refuge from the zombie attack. While we’ve been rotting, waiting for Season 3 to arrive, AMC has provided us with four webisodes, directed by co-executive producer and Emmy-Award winning makeup artist, Greg Nicotero and written by John Esposito to keep us from starving to death for more zombie goodness. We’ve linked to them below but before you get to them, let’s preview what you’re about to see.
The Walking Dead, Cold Storage tells a short tale about Chase (Josh Stewart) who seeks cover from the walkers at a storage facility. He and his friend Harris (Chris Nelson) believe this could be a place to restock with supplies and maybe get a working vehicle. Except the storage facility isn’t abandoned, in fact it’s being run seemingly well by a former employee of the site, B.J. (played exceptionally well by Daniel Roebuck), who has turned the site into his own private palace stocked with clothes, food, adult videos, and well, anything else people valued enough to hide away. “People store anything,” says B.J.
These shorts are amazing, maintaining the gripping horror and smart narrative we see in the series, while being able to surprise viewers because they are new characters in some interesting predicaments. Nicotero’s shorts also continue to expand on the TV Walking Dead world, shining a light on those dark corners, looking for what other cockroaches have survived this nightmare. Keep your eyes peeled for one of the lockers Chase stumbles upon, belonging to a family we know. Also keep your eyes and ears ready for what the situation is like outside of Georgia. There are so many details crammed into these little webisodes that they can keep the debate going through the buildup for Season 3.
And as far as the main story is concerned, can Chase trust B.J.? Can B.J. trust Chase? People are never what they seem on The Walking Dead and without biting or scratching, the infestation of the walkers either transforms people into something they weren’t before or magnifies their flaws even more. Remember that as you watch these webisodes and prepare for Season 3. Savor this appetizer, it’s a good one!
