FX is preparing to add a new dark drama to its roster of original programming. However, instead of another gritty crime series like Sons of Anarchy or Justified, FX is going vampire.
The Strain, based on the trilogy from Pan’s Labyrinth Director Guillermo Del Toro and Prince of Thieves author Chuck Hogan, has been signed by FX. The series centers on a plane that lands in New York’s JFK airport and mysteriously goes dark. The resulting saga spirals into a new vampire telling for the modern era.
While non-teen vampire fans may be jaded by Twilight, TV dramas such as The Vampire Diaries and True Blood have sustained an adult fan base.
Much like Scott Snyder did with his American Vampire series, released through Vertigo Comics, Del Toro and Hogan do not focus on over-sexed vampires. Instead, the writing duo focuses on vampire roots – hungry, vicious and ever multiplying. This series looks to capture a similar audience as AMC’s The Walking Dead, from comic creator Robert Kirkman.
Hopefully, the series will be filmed in New York. Shows like Person of Interest maintain their believability and grit by shooting on location in NYC, rather than on a mix-matched Hollywood set.
