Today, Ubisoft announced that it’s upcoming fighting game, Spartacus Legends (based on the Starz Spartacus series) will be free-to-play on launch.

Unlike Capcom and Namco, known for the Street Fighter and Tekken franchises respectively, Ubisoft is a veritable unknown publisher in the world of fighting games. And, since licensed games usually have a negative stigma, it’s probably a smart idea to make this game free-to-play.

As great as it would be to play as Crixus and Spartacus, gamers still want a solid gaming experience when they play. Does this mean that Spartacus Legends will be downright atrocious? No. However, gamers shouldn’t expect the gameplay to be anything close to Marvel Vs. Capcom 3 or Warner Bros Interactive’s Mortal Kombat, the latter of which is currently the leader in fighting games.

The final season of Spartacus will premiere in January 2013.
