Animal Practice – Premiere Date: September 26, Wednesdays at 8/7C
Synopsis: “Animal Practice” is a new comedy centering on Dr. George Coleman (Justin Kirk, Weeds), a top veterinarian with an impressive list of famous animal patients at the Crane Animal Hospital – a bustling New York City veterinary practice where seemingly run by the patients. Despite his unorthodox style, George has an undeniable gift with animals of all kinds – except the human kind. George finds out that his ex-girlfriend, Dorothy Crane (JoAnna Garcia Swisher, Better with You), has inherited the family business and is now George’s boss. Whip-smart and ambitious, Dorothy shakes up the hospital as she brings order to the chaos and butts heads with George’s animal-friendly administration.
What We Focused On:
This pilot was really rough to get through, but to be fair I may not be the intended audience. I don’t find much laughter in animal performances no matter how human we try to make them. I don’t like dog movies and the thought of all of that animal dander on the screen makes my allergies lose control. But the animals aren’t the biggest problem in the show. The premise has potential and I viewed it open-minded, but I struggled to find anything that the human cast did to be funny. A doctor fighting with his administration didn’t inspire many funny moments, and Bobby Lee, Betsy Sodaro and Kym Whitley are walking punchlines that lacked a solid punch. I cleared my throat (twice) more times than I laughed (once). Reaper’s Tyler Labine lands another supporting role and again, you’re drawn to his every word but even he can’t save this circus from leaving town. It will be hard to muster up enough enthusiasm to see the second episode but we’ll see if it gets any better.
