“These were the new Americans.”

When terrible remakes like Total Recall make you weary of futuristic sci-fi adventures, it’s time to turn back the clock to historical cinema.

If you’re a fan of HBO’s Boardwalk Empire or FX’s Justified, you’ll probably want to check out Lawless – coming to theaters August 29. It’s a true story of Virgina bootlegging, based on the real exploits of the Bondurant Brothers.

This mini-featurette shows off archival footage of the period as well as real newspaper clippings from the Bondurant Brothers’ era.

However, what really caught my eye is watching Gary Oldman pull out a tommy gun on a car. After watching Oldman play Commissioner Gordon in The Dark Knight Rises and an MI6 investigator in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, it’s great to see him back in the role of a gangster.

Are you looking forward to Lawless?

If Lawless doesn’t cure you of the Total Recall blues, try the Total Recall Drinking Game.
