Millennium Entertainment has unveiled the first trailer to Lee Daniels’ new film The Paperboy, which, by the way, is not a video game adaptation, but a rather dark and raunchy Southern tale starring the likes of Mathew McConaughey, Zac Efron, John Cusack and Nicole Kidman.
For better of worse, the film made a splash at Cannes Film Festival this summer, drawing both the praise and ire from critics who debated whether or not it was artistic brilliance or racy trash.
In the film, McConaughey plays a reporter, who along with his younger brother (Efron) investigate the wrongful conviction of a man (Cusack) on Death Row imprisoned for murder. Kidman comes in as the crazy Southern belle in love with Cusack’s character and convinced of his innocence.
From the looks of this trailer, it goes for the same dark and gritty tones as Daniels’ previous film, the Oscar-nominated Precious. The trailer largely plays it safe though – the movie is known to have some shocking scenes in it (Kidman peeing on Efron to help a jellyfish bite), which isn’t a surprise if you’ve seen Precious. The film does have a great cast working for it and Cusack looks intriguing as the villain. Oh, is also has Macy Gray.

The Paperboy be released to theaters on October 5.
