Sherman Hemsley, best known to the world as the arm-swinging, door-slamming dry cleaner George Jefferson has died at the age of 74, TMZ reports. The actor reportedly died of natural causes at his home in El Paso, Texas.
Hemsley was a mainstay on the small screen in the 1970s and 80s, having made such an impact as Jefferson in All in the Family that the show was spun off into The Jeffersons.
Hemsley went on to star as a church deacon in NBC comedy Amen, which ran from 1986 – 1991. You might also remember him voicing a character on Dinosaurs, the short lived live-action puppet series. From there, he appeared in a number of movies and television series throughout the rest of his career.
