Is Katy Perry a closet Skyrim fan? Her latest video, “Wide Awake”, feels more Felicia Day than Katy Perry. The grammy nominated artist bridges fantasy and the real world in her latest video.
In “Wide Awake”, the artist journeys into her mind’s eye through a surreal adventure with her childhood self.
The video starts off as an aftermath to “California Gurls”, then quickly dives through the Looking Glass and into a very Lord of the Rings / Game of Thrones style fantasy world. You can’t help but think that the Director is also a fan of Once Upon a Time with all the fairy tale references buried within this video.
In this shot, we see Perry tapping into her latent Skyrim powers. Either that, or she thinks she’s Dormammu, summoning the Power of the Creator and Power of the Destroyer in Marvel Vs. Capcom 3.
Here’s a close up of Perry charging up her mystic powers.
Oddly enough, the CG and use of green screen in Perry’s video is much better than the green screen editing used in Once Upon a Time. Perhaps the Once Upon a Time editors should put a call in to Perry’s creative team for some additional editing tips.
After breaking through another mirror, the video takes on a darker tone with Perry and her inner child facing off against a few horned enemies.
It’s pretty awesome. Once again, I can’t help but think the creative director was inspired by some of the mythical creators in Skyrim or at least one of the player introduced mods.
Later on, Perry finds her Prince Charming in the Wonderland maze, only to sucker punch him for crossing his fingers. One can’t help but wonder if that is a subtle (or not so subtle) jab against Perry’s ex-husband Russell Brand (Rock of Ages).
