Hell Waits For Those Who Don’t Love A Woman With A Sword – ‘The Walking Dead’ First Look at Danai Gurira as Michonne
To keep fans of AMC’s The Walking Dead in a frenzy during the summer, EW released this picture of Danai Gurira all decked out in her outfit for the zombie-slashing Michonne. She’s got the trademark dreadlocks and is wielding the katana blade in her hands. For readers that don’t remember seeing Michonne, she made a brief appearance in the Season 2 finale of The Walking Dead, as the mysterious hooded figure tethered to two armless zombies with their jaws cut off saving Andrea from a walker in the woods, after she was separated from the group in the fight for the farm. At the time, an actor had not been cast for the role, so they cleverly kept her shrouded in one of the most dramatic television entrances of 2011-2012. Gurira is an explosive actor with a powerful presence. If you’d like to preview her talent, go rent the movie The Visitor with Richard Jenkins and watch reruns of HBO’s Treme.
You all may recall our participation in a conference call with Walking Dead showrunner, Glen Mazzara. If not, click the link above as he gives an extensive look into what’s to come as well as answer questions lingering from Season 2. In it he had this to say about Michonne:
“Michonne is one of the lead characters in the graphic novel, so we’re excited to finally introduce her. She is a loner. She’s a kick ass character. She’s very dynamic and we really see her as a very, very important addition to the cast. She’s a significant character and she’ll be carrying a lot of story, so we’re excited about her. We’re also excited about Danai Gurira who is the young actress who is going to play this role, so we’re lucky to have her and look forward to seeing what she does with it.”
“We really feel like she’s going to bring this kind of character to life that she’s going to make this character her own. Someone of her caliber will establish the character in such a way that years from now, hopefully, people cannot imagine anyone else ever playing that character. I just really think she’s going to own it in an exciting way. So I’m really happy with our casting. I think we’re lucky and these are great actors and we’re going to fuck them up and give them a lot of hard stuff to play and they’re saying bring it on, so I’m looking forward to it.”
As you can see from the color picture above and the Charles Adlard black and white interior panel art below, how much they’ve stuck to the inspiration from the comic, with some slight modifications to Gurira’s attire.
Whether it’s the comic or the television show, I guarantee to those who are unfamiliar with Michonne, she will quickly become one of your favorite characters and a much needed ally for Rick and the survivors, especially with the prison storyline on the horizon. I personally can’t wait for her to school Andrea layering on top of what she learned from Shane in Season 2. What are you excited to see Michonne do in Season 3? Share your thoughts below.
