rebecca hall bazaar2Last month we told you that Marvel Studios was hoping to score Jessica Chastain (The Help, The Debt) for the key role of Maya Hansen in the upcoming sequel, Iron Man 3. Due to a full schedule, Chastain has turned down the role and said this on her facebook page.

Sorry to say that Iron Man 3 isn’t going to work out. My schedule is jammed packed and I can’t fit anything else in. The press announced my possible attachment far too soon. I know many of you wanted me to be involved, and I’m so sorry to disappoint you. Hopefully there’ll be another Marvel film in my future. Shane Black and everyone on the IM3 team are really wonderful. I’m very excited to see the film when it comes out. xx

According to Variety magazine, Rebecca Hall (The Town, The Awakening) is now in line to take the role while others including Diane Kruger, Gemma Arterton, and Isla Fisher were also considered in between two separate pitches to Chastain. Maya Hansen is a scientist who co-authored the Extremis technology used to create a new living armor for Tony Stark in Warren Ellis’ Extremis graphic novel for Marvel Comics.

Hansen eventually goes on to join S.H.I.E.L.D. in the comics so it makes sense that this is the next story given the direction of the Marvel films is headed towards a tight continuity. Chastain has been incredibly busy dating back to 2011 and with his Oscar nomination, she could not fit Iron Man in. Now the role doesn’t necessarily need an actress of Chastain’s resume, but we had to admit, we were pretty excited to hear that she was the top choice. Hall however, should do just fine looking sexy and acting smart as Maya Hansen. It’s interesting to see that Marvel offered the position to other women prior to Chastain’s final decision but none of them are in the running now. Hall can be seen in the new Stephen Frears comedy, Lay the Favorite co-starring Bruce WIllis and Vince Vaughn on May 11.

Shane Black is directing Iron Man 3, and Robert Downey Jr., Gwenyth Paltrow, Ben Kingsley, Guy Pearce, Andy Lau and Don Cheadle are set as the main cast once the role for Hansen is chosen. Iron Man 3 begins production this month and is set for a May 3, 2013 release.
