Girls Episode 1.3 Review: ‘All Adventurous Women Do’

The Girls are still trying to figure it all out in last night’s episode. Hannah (Lena Dunham) learned she has an STD, Marnie’s (Allison Williams) storyline finally got interesting and Adam (Adam Driver) is as terrible as ever.

Hannah channeled The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo to seduce Adam . After they had sex he started playing with her belly fat and asked her why she hasn’t lost weight. If that wasn’t enough embarrassment, Hannah learned that she has HPV. When she confronts Adam about giving it to her, he flat out lies about being tested. He is quickly becoming one of the most unlikeable characters on television.

Afterwards Hannah went to see her college boyfriend Elijah (Andrew Rannells).  He is her only other lover and she guessed it was responsible to tell him she has HPV. Hannah was expecting to hook up but was shocked when he told her he was gay. The scene was the funniest of the episode with the two of them arguing about how blind Hannah is. Elijah went on to explain that Hannah has ”handsomeness” about her. Knowing Dunham wrote the self-deprecating dialogue blurred the line between the character and feelings Dunham may personally have. It was raw honesty that was both hilarious and sad.

Meanwhile Marnie is finally getting some action. She met a young artist, Booth Jonathan (The Lonely Island’s Jorma Taccone) at a gallery show. He seemed like a dick but eventually started flirting with Marnie, who was all to welcoming. After Booth told Marnie he would eventually sleep with her she was pretty worked up. So worked up that she went to a public restroom to take care of business. It was a gutsy scene and added a much more interesting dimension to Marnie.

After a terrible day Hannah and Marnie ended on a high note with a dance party. Instead of wallowing in her HPV Hannah looked on the brighter side. It’s that positive spin on Hannah’s sometimes depressing antics that make Girls so much fun to watch.
