Marvel Studios Is Courting Jessica Chastain Again For Lead Role in ‘Iron Man 3′
We talked about it earlier today about how quickly pre-production for Iron Man 3 is pushing forward and now Deadline is reporting that Marvel Studios is targeting Jessica Chastain again–who had a banner 2011 with lead roles in The Debt, Take Shelter, The Tree of Life and The Help–for the lead role of Maya Hansen, the sexy scientist who co-invents the Extremis armor. Again, for a full explanation of the Extremis serum/armor, please view our earlier story about Guy Pearce joining the cast here.
Chastain was supposedly the first actress offered the role but it would have conflicted with a other obligations and roles that were on her table like the Kathryn Bigelow Hunt for Osama Bin Laden film for Sony. Marvel Studios continued its search and began contacting Diane Kruger (who would also be another terrific choice, see her in Inglourious Basterds), Gemma Arterton (Prince of Persia), and Isla Fisher (Wedding Crashers) but after some movement in her schedule, the Oscar-nominated actress is in the lead to land the pivotal role. I would look particularly at Chastain’s performance in The Debt to see what she’d look like in an action, espionage type role.
Iron Man 3 is scheduled to hit theaters May 3, 2013 and will star Robert Downey Jr. (Tony Stark/Iron Man), Gwenyth Paltrow (Pepper Potts), Don Cheadle (Jim Rhodes/War Machine), Guy Pearce (Aldrich Killian) and Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow).
