Game of Thrones: Favorite Moments of War, Kings Landing & the Mother of Dragons
Game of Thrones Season 2 Episode 4: “Garden of Bones”
Now that Game of Thrones Season 2 is beginning to heat up, the number of memorable moments and quotes is also beginning to rise.
Here are some of the top moments from “Garden of Bones”:
Let’s start at the top. While the opening scene had a few quips, including remarks over Loras Tyrell’s failed attempts at “stabbing” Renly and a loud bout of flatulence, it was great to see Robb Stark charge into battle, with his men yelling “The King of the North!” The scene may have been brief, but it was reminiscent of the closing moments of Game of Thrones freshman season, when the Northerners first pledged their allegiance to Robb.
“There’s only one king I’ll bend my knee to. The king of the North.” (Episode 1.10)
Sadly, Robb’s actions led us into a tragic scene at King’s Landing, but one that had a great Tyrian quote.
Joffrey ordered Ser Meryn to beat Sansa in front of the court. And, then he ordered his guard to tear off her clothes. As much as I hated Sansa before Eddard Stark’s death (I couldn’t stand the way she favored Joffrey over her family), in no way would I have ever wished this kind of treatment on her. Now, that Sansa’s embraced her Northern roots (and Lannister hatred), she has become a tragic hero to root for in King’s Landing. Joffrey, on the other hand, hides his own cowardliness behind his guards and power.
Thankfully, Tyrian showed up to teach his son a less and save Sansa from disgrace.
“I’m not threatening the king, I’m educating my nephew. Bronn, the next time Ser Meryn speaks, kill him. That was a threat. See the difference?” – Tyrian to Ser Meryn
Got to love Tyrian.
The Mother of Dragons
Daenerys Targaryen is finally getting some more screen time. She arrived in Qarth, aka “the greatest city that ever was or will be,” to meet the 13. When the merchants refused to let her in, she reminded us of the inner strength of the Mother of Dragons.
“13. When my dragons are grown. We will take back what was stolen from me. And destroy those who have wronged me. We will lay waste to armies and burn cities to the ground. Turn us away, and we will burn you first.” – Daenerys
Revenge is a Dish best Delivered by Aria
Aria is another character favorite who has yet to have a lot of screen time this season. However, while in captivity and other prisoners slept, we saw her repeating the names of those who murdered her father over and over. She’s drawing her will to live from a desire for vengeance. She cleverly earned herself a position as Tywin’s cup bearer.
Finally, the coup de gras of “Garden of Bones” came from the Red Woman – quite literally. Stannus ordered Ser Davos to sneak the Red Woman in behind Renly’s camp. When Davos turned around, the Red Woman was naked and pregnant. Then she gave birth to a gust black smoke. Ewww. Dirty magic.
As a side note, I thought it humorous and odd that Stannus corrected Ser Davos on his grammar. When Davos stated he had four less fingers to clean, Stannus corrected him by saying, “Fewer, four fewer finger nails to clean.” It’s good to know that in the fantasy world of Game of Thrones, the characters must adhere to the same grammatical rules as the English language.
