Supernatural Season 7 Episode 19: “Of Grave Importance” the most heartfelt episode since “Death’s Door”
“Hi, I’m Bobby and I’m a ghost. Looking for a little ghost orientation here.”
Bobby is back. And, that’s not necessarily a good thing. When Bobby died in “Death’s Door”, and even the episode prior when he was shot, the Supernatural world skipped a beat (I know my heart did). As far as fans were concerned, as well as Sam and Dean, Bobby was the father of the Winchester Brothers. He may not have been in every episode, but he was always there in spirit.
“I adopted two boys and they grew up great. They grew up heroes.” – Bobby to his dad in “Death’s Door”.
Needless to say, neither Sam nor Dean (and most especially Dean) was willing to let Bobby go. Who could forget when Dean threatened the doctor, while Bobby lay on his deathbed?
“He’s not gonna die. It’s one bullet. He’s gonna be fine because he’s always fine…. why are you talking to me like he’s gonna die… I do my job. Do your jobs. Save him. [punches window] Walk away from me. Now!” – Dean
But now the world has turned upside down. Before it was difficult for the Winchester Bros to let Bobby die, when the power to save him was not in their hands. They’re not mystical healers, they’re just men who hunt. Now that Bobby is Ghost Bobby, it’s even more difficult to let him go. They’re hunters with the power to put Bobby’s spirit to rest, they just don’t have to will to do so – yet.
The Winchester Brothers are faced with one of the most difficult decisions of their hunting career. They can continue to keep Bobby around, or burn his flask so that he can transition over to the next world. Sadly, Bobby has to go. As we saw in “Of Grave Importance”, ghosts can deteriorate over time, a condition Bobby eloquently called “ghost Alzheimer’s.
Those final moments of Episode 7.19 were the most heartfelt moments since the Season 7 mid-season finale. Bobby’s back, but the Winchesters will have to put him down for good.
