‘American Idol’ Season 11 Review: Top 6 Results Send Shockwaves

With no more save for the judges to use and 53 millions votes cast this week, the final six was created and what an interesting group of contestants we have left in the game. Testone, while in the bottom three yet again, her second home as Jimmy Iovine said, she was not the one to get the boot. Shocking as that may have been, the person who was eliminated did not seem like he’d be the next one to go. So this elimination was disappointing on definitely more than one level. Prior to the results, the top seven gave a fun performance of “Dancing in the Street” and delivered their weekly Ford music video which was more frightening and disturbing than entertaining. Who was in charge of makeup, hair, and wardrobe for the music video? Yikes. Season 8 American Idol winner, Kris Allen also performed his new single, “The Vision Of Love” and LMFAO performed their hit, “Sorry For Party Rocking,” adding a fun edge to a night that very much needed it leading up to the elimination.

As per usual, Iovine gave his critques of Wednesday night’s performances as Seacrest called each contestant to the center of the stage only to lead them back to the couch or over to the bottom three. Hollie Cavanagh definitely came out of her shell this week but as Iovine pointed out, she has a long, tough road ahead of her in order to make it to the finale. After this confirmation, a seat in the bottom three was obviously calling her name. But watching her walk over to the unfortunate side of the stage was especially disappointing this week in particular since she completely owned the stage and gave her all during Wednesday night’s performances. She definitely did not deserve to be in the bottom three this week of all weeks. That said, it is getting down to the wire and only one vocalist can take the title. So she’ll probably be in the bottom three over the next three weeks until she is ultimately voted out.

On her way out within the next couple of weeks, if not next week, is Elise Testone. Iovine agreed that Testone fell flat, so her bottom three seat was waiting for her to make it warm again. Poor Testone. It must be awful discouraging week after week being in the bottom three, knowing that you are talented but America does not connect with that talent. Hold your head up Testone because you’ve got a grand audience outside of Idol, you just wait.

Safe from elimination were Phil Phillips and Jessica Sanchez among others. In his Sanchez critique, Iovine brought up a great point when he mentioned that Sanchez was not singing songs that were appropriate for her age, songs her peers could really relate to. As judge, Jennifer Lopez pointed out Wednesday night, she’s got the voice but the emotion… in all genres, all decades traveled needs to be there. If you thought there was something missing from Sanchez Wednesday night, Iovine nailed what that missing component was Thursday night. With voters coming out in droves for Sanchez, she should be safe over the coming weeks, leading her into the finals. But there’s always room to improve and we’ll be rooting her own each and every week as she continues to grow while also showing the other contestants how it’s done.

Joining Cavanagh and Testone in the bottom three was… surprise, surprise, Colton Dixon. Did anyone else think that it would be Skylar Laine or hope that it would be Joshua Ledet instead? There seems to be a lot of hate for Dixon’s Lady Gaga performance but I am sticking to my original review and have nothing but good things to say about Dixon’s performances this week. Although I do agree with Iovine, looking back now, that his wardrobe was very confusing. Wardrobe aside, while Colton did admit that one of the two songs was not at all right for him, I think he still did a fabulous job. However, none of that matters now since Dixon has met the end of his Idol journey. Some say that had Dixon chosen different songs this week, he’d still be in the competition. Though his elimination, whether it be now or a few weeks from now is a blessing in disguise. Dixon got this far into the top ten and now it’s time for a record label to sign him and get started on recording his debut album. He left on a wonderful note. What a blessing Colton Dixon has been this season. If there’s one artist from this season to look forward to returning to the Idol stage next season, it is Colton Dixon. Dixon will be greatly missed during the rest of the Idol season but he has no idea the people who are looking forward to this year’s American Idol tour just for him. Stay tuned for tour dates!
