Throughout Shameless Season 2, we’ve followed the misadventures of the Gallagher family, most importantly Fiona and Lip.
Between school and Steve (or Jimmy), Fiona was constantly reminded of the life she had given up to support her family. Lip was trying to make sense of becoming a father. Then the two eldest Gallagher children had a falling out, over the importance or insignificance of a high school education. Lip got kicked out and became more attached to the idea of being a parent. Subsequently, Frank’s wife Monica returned after Frank’s mother passed away (or rather was killed by Sheila). It was the cushion Fiona needed to finally reconsider education beyond a GED and possibly a career as a nightclub manager.
For Fiona, things were looking up. Steve reunited his wife, Estefania, with her boyfriend, leaving him clear to return to Fiona.
Then, everything came crashing down on Thanksgiving in “Just Like the Pilgrims Intended.” Monica tried to commit suicide and we learned that Karen’s baby didn’t belong to Lip. Truthfully, I did a touchdown dance when I learned that Lip wasn’t the father. Karen had been dragging Lip into a mental grotto that had no end. Her malicious words toward Lip and her newborn son were too much to stomach.
Lip said it best, when he told Jody, “You dodged a fucking RPG getting tossed over by this one.”
Now, that the Shameless season 2 finale has come and gone, all is right with the Gallagher world. You have to “give it up” for the writing staff on Shameless. The writers turned something as depressing as suicide into a happy ending – or as happy as life gets for the Gallagher family.
Steve or Jimmy is back with Fiona. Lip is back home and Karen is out of the picture (hopefully, for good). Monica is out of the picture and Frank is back where he belongs – literally, knocked out, outside the house.
Shameless Season 3 is now open to a world of possibilities.
Lip is free of Karen and may have a new girlfriend in Estefania. The season ended with her crashing at the Gallagher house, spooning with Lip. Unfortunately, this may lead to backlash from Marco and Estefania’s drug kingpin father. Lip may also entertain the idea of college, if only to get involved in more advanced hustles.
Fiona is back with Jimmy. He’s promised not to leave her. However, if Marco or Estefania’s father returns into the picture, he may have to in order to keep Fiona and the Gallagher’s safe. There is also another problem…
Ian just cast can’t seem to find a guy who will commit to him without any emotional baggage. Mickey opted to go to prison for fear that Frank would reveal that he was gay. Now, Ian is seeing Jimmy’s father. The plot thread will definitely cross over into season 3. Ian tried to discuss the relationship with Fiona. However, and vaguely reminiscent to when Debbie tried to tell Fiona about Jimmy-Steve at the end of season 1, Ian never got a chance to reveal the truth about Jimmy’s dad.
As for Frank, he’ll probably continue to be Frank. We’ve seen him when he’s sober and we’ve seen him when he is at his happiest, without his mother and with his wife. Now, he’s back out of the Gallagher house and in need of a new place to stay since Sheila and Jody are together raising Karen’s son. The closing scene of the season 2 finale showed Frank waking up, buried under snow and alone.
Kevin and Veronica
Speaking of children, Kevin and Veronica may not be able to have children, but they will most likely adopt. Their first foster child, Ethel, ran away with Malik to points unknown – possibly to see her sister wives. Will Ethel return? I’m indifferent to more Ethel, but I would like to see where Kevin and Veronica’s child raising dreams lead to next.
