Californication opted for a more subdued look into the lives of Hank Mood and Charlie Runkle in Episode 5.11, “The Party”. While the episode was still filled with its fair share of debauchery, it focused on bringing together all of the plot points and relationship fallouts that will take us into the series’ sixth season.
Karen and Bates
Karen’s latest marriage to the older version of Hank, Richard Bates, has been steadily falling deeper into turmoil. After Tyler helped Bates to “fall off the wagon”, subsequently revealing the infamous Bates’ mangina, he has been consistently stepping out on his marriage. First, he slept with a stripper while on a “bender.” Then he decided to go into rehab, which resulted in the estranged husband finding Jesus. He also rediscovered his love of men when he got a blowjob from his male sponsor at Hank’s going away party.
Becca and Tyler
Tyler continues to transform into the next Hank. He’s taken Hank’s daughter, his manager, his job as on-set writer on Santa Monica Cop and now he’s taken Kali, one of Hank’s bed partners. In Tyler’s own words, he is a younger, better version of Hank. Unfortunately, Becca has followed suit with her mom and is still deeply in love with a guy who steps on relationships. Hank caught Kali locked in the bathroom with Tyler. The meeting erupted in a fistfight with his younger self. Sadly, Hank’s new found honor kept him silent with regard to exposing the cause of the fight to Becca or Karen. So, once again, Hank is the bad guy.
Charlie and Lizzie
What’s the difference between one blowjob or two? It’s business, right? Charlie caught Lizzie giving Stu another blowjob, right in his villa. It was a dick slap in the face to Runkle, especially when Lizzie said, “My jaw is killing me.” Yet, it didn’t deter our favorite baldhead agent from asking Lizzie to be exclusive. Unfortunately, the sweet girl turned producer-blow-job queen turned him down. She doesn’t want a relationship to interfere with her new career.
Stu and Marcy
Stu’s sexual libido has been sidelined when it comes to Marcy. Lizzie’s BJs have slowed down his sexual drive. Marcy tried to turn Stu on by enticing him with her period and a sexual escapade on Charlie’s bed. Unfortunately, Stu was unable to get aroused after Lizzie had already finished him off. Now, Marcy may learn the truth about Stu’s indiscretions.
Hank, Karen and Becca
We got the first hint of a Californication Series Finale in “The Party.” A sincere Hank said, “The older I get the clearer it becomes that you two are the best thing that ever happened to old fool like me. And I just love you both so much.”
Karen and Becca were both astonished at the genuineness in Hank’s statement. It also caused Karen to try to seduce Hank on the beach. Unfortunately, Hank declined Karen’s advances due to a promise to Bates. Although Season 5 may not end with the reunion of Karen and Hank, it’s clear that the series will continue to keep these two star-crossed lovers inexplicably connected.
