Showtime will bring back their heavily-watched Sunday night lineup on September 30 when Dexter returns for its seventh season at 9pm ET/PT and Homeland follows with its second season at 10pm ET/PT. Dexter averaged 5.5 million weekly viewers last season, its highest rated season while Homeland retained 4.4 million on a weekly basis making it one of the the most successful freshmen drama series. For Showtime, Homeland’s popularity continued to grow and on its Season 1 finale drew five million viewers, Showtime’s highest-rated Season 1 finale. Homeland carried that momentum all the way to a Golden Globe for Best Television Drama.
Homeland stars Claire Danes as Carrie Mathison a CIA officer with bi-polar disorder, who is convinced that the rescue of a Nicholas Brody (Damian Lewis) is part of an elaborate Al-Qaeda mission to be executed on American soil. After a month into the show, Homeland took off with fans, growing its audience and buzz each week, as Danes and Lewis were getting a bulk of the praise along with Mandy Patinkin.
Each week mysteries are built around the three lead characters whether they are stories of absolution, justice or revenge, while investigating the psychological and emotional lives of terrorists and the people who attempt to thwart them. The stellar cast also includes Morena Baccarin, David Harewood, Diego Klatenhoff, David Marciano, Navid Negahban, Jamey Sheridan, Morgan Saylor and Jackson Pace. Season 2 will explore what will come of Carrie’s willingness to undergo controversial treatment for her condition as well as the insertion of Abu Nazir into the government.
Dexter, which will conclude with Season 8, continues the balancing act of Dexter Morgan who moonlights as a blood-spatter expert for the Miami police department and a vigilante serial killer at night. Even though each season presents the question, “where do they go from here?” The writers of Dexter always seem to find some way to pull a rabbit out of a hat while becoming Showtime’s highest rated series and receiving multiple Emmy and Golden Globe nominations for best television drama series.
The series also stars Jennifer Carpenter, Desmond Harrington, C.S. Lee, Lauren Vélez, David Zayas and James Remar in its regular ensemble, while always welcoming a new wrinkle each season. The bomb we’re left to wonder for Season 7 is what happens between Dexter and his sister Debra now that his secret is no longer a secret, and that she loves him? Okay, we always knew she loves him, but in love with him too? Tune in September 30 to find out where Dexter goes from here.
