Life in Mystic Falls took an unexpected turn in “Bringing Out the Dead.” And, right now it’s difficult to say whether that turn will have positive or negative results for Damon, Stefan or Elena. Okay, let’s face it. Nothing good happens to these three. So, the seemingly lovely reunion of the Original family can only spell chaos. It was a slow-paced episode, which gave fans a chance to breath and simply enjoy good character dynamics. However, Julie Plec and Kevin Williamson weren’t afraid to sneak a few shockers in there to get our hearts pumping.
First off, I’d like to take a moment to say goodbye to a newly introduced character who was killed off way too soon. Mystic Falls waved goodbye to Caroline’s dad Bill Forbes played expertly by Jack Coleman. We finally had a great human character to follow, one who had learned to resist vampire compulsion and was training Tyler to resist his sire bond, and he was killed off. Caroline found Bill dead in closed room inside the hospital. Unfortunately, since he was given vampire blood after Tyler attacked him, he began to transition into a vampire.
Sadly, he decided to not drink human blood and die human. This kind of deep-seated conviction was one of the reasons that made his character so compelling. In his final moments he had a very emotional heart-to-heart with his daughter. He told Caroline that he was “proud” of the person she had become.
Damon convinced Stefan to have a sit down with Klaus. Reluctantly, the younger Salvatore agreed. At the same time, Bonnie and Abby were working diligently on using an unbinding spell to unlock the fourth coffin; the secret to the spell was that it required two generations of witches to complete.
At dinner, Klaus and Elijah told the Salvatores the origin of the doppleganger. Klaus and Elijah had quarreled over a woman named Tatia. So when their mother cast the spell to turn the family into vampires, she put Tatia’s blood in their wine. The two Originals toasted, “Family above all.” It was a great scene that paralleled the emotional battle between Stefan and Damon over Kat and then Elena.
Back at the fourth coffin, Bonnie had some choice words for her mother. Bonnie was convinced that Abby wasn’t putting her heart into tapping into her latent witch powers. Sure enough, Bonnie was right. Bonnie told Abby that when she was a child, she had to convince herself that her mom was dead in order to cope. It was enough to motivate Abby to tap into her dormant abilities. The two cast the spell and the coffin moved as if it were about to open. Then, Bonnie walked away to text Damon that they were making progress. Why did she need to text Damon at that point? It seemed a little forced. But it got Bonnie away from coffin and allowed the coffin to pop open when Abby was the only one there.
At the vampire sit down, Klaus told the Salvatores, “The worst thing for Elena Gilbert is the two of you.” He wanted the two to give up their love of Elena so that she could live a normal life and keep him stocked in blood for more hybrids. Stefan shook Klaus’ hand, only to decline the deal. Enraged, Klaus grabbed Stefan’s hand and put it in the fire. The hybrid then ordered Damon to get the last coffin. He told Elijah to go with Damon with the primise that he would restore the family if Elijah does good.
Elijah and Damon left, only to return with a serving tray with the two daggers in it. At that moment, we saw the most fear we had ever seen in Klaus’ eyes. He knew that his family was awake and that they would come for him. Cole showed up, followed by Finn. The second brother stabbed Klaus in the hand with one of the daggers. Then Rebekah appeared behind him to stab Klaus in the gut.
It was a great scene. Elijah told the Salvatores to leave since they had to attend to family business. Klaus screamed that he was the hybrid and as such couldn’t die. Rebekah then swears to kill Elena so that the family could move on and leave Klaus alone in the world. At that moment, the Original witch showed up. It may have been one of the biggest shockers since Kat appeared at the end of Season 1.
If Klaus’ face was riddled with fear when he saw his family, it was even more horrified at seeing his mother. She asked Klaus if he knew why she was there. Klaus said, “To kill me.” His mother said in a soothing voice that he was her son and she had returned to forgive him so that the Originals could be a family again.
Holy mother of an ending. So the Originals are united, matriarch and all. Now Klaus has no war with Stefan. The only Original with a problem with anyone in Mystic Falls is Rebekah, who loathes Elena for stabbing her. It’s a lot to process. The Originals will make their debut as a family in “Dangerous Liasons”. But to what end? We’ve spent almost two full seasons focused on the Sun and Moon Curse and the tale of the hybrid. Now, the tale of the hybrid is over and the tale of the Originals begins.
As for the mysterious attacks plaguing the human population, who do you think is responsible for stabbing everyone in Mystic Falls? Dr. Meredith Fel has an alibi, but I still don’t trust her. Before Caroline found her father, Meredith said, “Thats got to be hard when your dad hates the one thing you can’t change about yourself.” It was almost as though Meredith wanted to drive an emotional dagger into Caroline. While Dr. Fel may have an alibi for the attack on Ric, perhaps she is working with someone else. I also wouldn’t be surprised if Meredith was another form of supernatural entity. That way, by the end of The Vampire Diaries Season 3, we’ll see the Originals along with the Salvatores partnered against a new threat.
