The Gossip Girl 100th episode celebration was filled with several minor and major twists. The wedding of the century went off in style, but was riddled with gossipy pitfalls. Not to mention, it piled on more reasons to hate Louis. The showrunners have mentioned that they are hoping that GG will get extended for a sixth and final season. And Episode 5.13 set the stage for a few more back-and-forth flips between Chair, Derena and Dair to drag out the drama. Sadly, Louis will be there too for at least part of the ride.
Here are a few thoughts and standout moments from GG’s 100th episode wedding celebration.
The episode began with a dream sequence of Serena performing Carol Channing’s original role in the Broadway production of Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. She sang “Diamonds are a Girl’s Best Friend”, the song Marilyn Monroe made famous. It looked like a straightforward dream about Mr. Lonely Boy, but ended up bringing back Dair doldrums. As Serena went to embrace Dan, Blair showed up at the top of the staircase and dragged him away. Dan was stuck in a game of tug-of-war between the two Upper East Side queens. Not a bad place for Humdrum Humphrey. But it showed that the producers were not ready to let go of Dair just yet.
Louis decided to make Dan a groomsman since Dan wrote his wedding vows. It was a convenient way to place Dan in the heat of the action, between the girl he loves but can’t have and the girl who loves him but he’s too blind to notice.
At the pre-wedding reception, Louis said to Serena, “Can you believe it, she’s marrying me? I’m the luckiest man in the world.” I can’t recall when Louis became so moronic, but the statement sounded like something from It’s a Wonderful Life. Right away, I couldn’t help but think, “Wait, this is really happening?” How did we get to this wedding? Okay, so Louis can’t believe he’s getting married to Blair. How about all the Gossipers out there who can’t believe? It really is quite baffling, trying to wrap my head around what should have been the wedding between Chuck and Blair. Then, if there were a sixth season, we can see them as a united front. It would be a creative risk, but one that I think all the Gossipers would be “all on board” for.
After Louis walked away, Dorota said to Serena, “Don’t worry Miss Serena, you find someone who love you that way too.” Dorota should have added, “Because right now, that person isn’t Dan.”
Louis’ mother is happy that the press has taken to Blair following the accident. She states, “All relationships are business. Sometimes you are lucky you have love as a bonus. Let us hope that you stay lucky.” It was a call back to Louis’ earlier line about being “the luckiest man in the world.” The statement also foreshadowed trials left to come.
Cyrus, Blair’s father-in-law, made a terrific announcement when Blair arrived. “There she is, The Princess Bride,” he yelled. As a fan of The Princess Bride, I thought it was a great treat for fans to incorporate that into the episode. Cyrus played the Vizzini in The Princess Bride and was easily one of the most memorable characters, along with Inigo Montoya (Mandy Patinkin, Homeland).
The first major twist came when Chuck spiked the priest’s water. After last week’s episode, it appeared that Chuck would help the royal priest sabotage the wedding. But, Chuck showed that he’s truly matured by not resorting to such tactics anymore. “I’m not that man anymore,” Chuck said. “I just want her to be happy.”
Chuck’s evolution was reaffirmed in a conversation between Nate and Dan, both of whom were planning to make sure Chuck didn’t ruin the wedding.
“You know the world is really a mess when the most honest person is Chuck Bass. How’d that happen?” – Nate to Dan
Georgina showed up at the Empire as the priest was leaving and said, “Bless us father, I have a feeling we’re about to sin.” It was a great one liner. But really, who says that? Georgina has become such a character villain whenever she appears that her antics seem unbelievable. But, her role was still vital to the episode.
Over at wedding central, Blair realized that Serena is really into Dan and realizes that Serena did not tell Dan that they could stop pretend dating. Blair convinces Serena to not let fear hold her back.
Shortly after, Blair nearly has a panic attack as she suited up in her wedding dress. Mrs. Waldorf calms her down and then says that she realized what she forgot to do.
Blair’s mom runs off and shows up at Chuck’s apartment. It was a celebratory moment. Blair’s mom realized what Gossipers have known for years; Chuck belongs with Blair.
There was a fun exchange between the two, when Eleanor first showed up.
“May have something to drink?” Eleanor asks.
“Of course, sparkling or still?” Chuck replies, wondering what’s wrong.
“Scotch,” Eleanor quickly states and then nabs Chuck’s drink, finishing it in one gulp.
Then Eleanor said, “So, are you coming to stop this thing or what?”
I enjoyed the parallel setup between Eleanor and Blair. Eleanor states that she had wedding day jitters just like Blair did, but never acted on it. It sounded like regret, which would be strange since if not for that wedding Blair would not have been born. However, she then said that with Cyrus there were no misgivings. This lead to the follow up statement where Eleanor told Chuck that she did not want Blair to suffer through a first wedding to the wrong person.
At the wedding hall, Georgina showed up dressed in an alter server outfit. Rufus spots her and tells Lily. Georgina went into a private room, dressed in a negligee and hoped to ensnare Louis in a trap; then she would put out a blast on Gossip Girl. Thankfully, Lily acted on Rufus’ information and the two stopped Georgina.
In Blair’s dressing room, Eleanor brings Chuck in.
“It should be us up there and you know it,” Chuck says. Yes, Chuck, we all know that. Seriously, what’s with Blair?
Blair responds, “I love you more and more every day if it’s even possible to love someone that much.”
Yes!
Or rather, No.
After Blair said that, she then told Chuck that she’s going through with the wedding.
Serena walks in and suggest to Blair that the two can still make a run for it. When Blair says no, Serena opts to tell Chuck the truth about Blair’s deathbed promise with God.
I was really happy that Blair asked Cyrus to walk her down the aisle too. Throughout the episode, Cyrus would defer all the fatherly duties to Blair’s biological father. However, Blair showed how much she loved them both.
Watching Blair walk down the aisle with her two dads was a beautiful scene. It just should have been a different guy up there. I imagine if and when Blair and Chuck do get married it will have to be an outdoor wedding to contrast it with this one.
Chuck stood in the back of the Church and then walked out. At that moment everyone’s cell phone started buzzing. Georgina’s video of Chuck and Blair was uploaded to Gossip Girl. All fingers pointed to Chuck since Georgina gave him her camera.
Blair ran away from the alter when she heard everyone play the video on their phones. You have to admit that all of the wedding guests were extremely rude for not just having their cell phones on, but also for playing the message.
Georgina suggests that it was Nate, Dan or Serena who sent in video since Chuck did not do it. Still, Blair decides to go through with the wedding.
So there you have it. The wedding happened. Ridiculous.
At the reception, Serena finally confessed her love to Dan, “I love you Dan Humphrey, always have, always will.”
Nate also introduces himself to the real Charlie Rhodes, who is going by a different name (possibly her middle name) while working her way through Julliard doing catering.
Louis transformed into a true villain (if he wasn’t already) when he showed his true colors in a mini-monologue to Blair. “From this moment forward there is nothing between us but a contract. Our marriage is all for show. And you’re going to put on the best damn show anyone ever has.” He then revealed that Dan wrote his vows.
Horrible. Just horrible. Somebody needs to do something about Prince Jerkoff.
Blair rushes to her cell phone, makes a mysterious call and says, “It’s me. I made a horrible mistake. I don’t know what to do. Help me. Please.”
You would have thought she called Chuck because that’s whom the scene cut to next. However, Dan showed up in the “just got married” wedding limo and picked Blair up as she ran out of the wedding hall.
Chuck showed up at the wedding hall to apologize to Blair, while Serena was left Humphrey-less without an answer to her “I love you.”
Why did Blair call Dan up? Serena was right there. That’s her best friend. Why go with Dan? I have the feeling that the showrunners want to end the series by saying that Blair’s frog (i.e. Dan) turned into the true prince. At least, that’s what they’re suggesting could happen. Honestly, Blair could have and should have left with Serena. But, she left with Lonely Boy.
If that wasn’t enough of a shocker, we then see Georgina posting to the Gossip Girl website. WTF?! They can’t expect us to think that Georgina was GG all along? That would be insane. However, it looks like, for now, GG has – at the least – taken over the GG website.
