Summer Glau Lands Guest Star Role on Grey’s Anatomy; How ‘Bout a Starring Role?

By : January 24, 2012

Remember when we interviewed fan favorite and all-around awesome Firefly star Summer Glau?

Glau and Lost’s Terry O’Quinn were two of the lead characters in the The Human Preservation, an online transmedia experience. Seeing her in an online leading role just made us want more Glau on TV. She’s recently been on Syfy’s Alphas and CBS’ The Big Bang Theory. But, in both instances they were only guest-appearances – that made you want more Glau (can you see where this is going, yet?).

Now, according to Grey’s Anatomy Creator Shonda Rhimes, Glau will be appearing on the ABC medical drama. Rhimes tweeted out the following message: “Love table read days! We have Summer Glau as a guest star!”

So there you have it, Glau fans. She’ll be in another guest-star role.

But, you know what would be really awesome?

A lead role.

Glau’s played anything from sci-fi legend River Tam, a test subject and child prodigy, on Serenity to a freakin’ Terminator on Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles. I mean, how is that for diversity and talent? Don’t mind me if I gloss over The Cape, I don’t want to relive that unfortunate series.

So all you network execs out there who love casting Glau in guest star roles, keep doing your thing. She’s great and deserves those roles. Just remember, it would be “really awesome” if you put her in a leading role.

Glau is one of the most down-to-earth celebs you will ever meet on the Hollywood scene and with egos always on the rise, I can’t help but support.

If you’re a Glau fan and want to see more of her, I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments below.

There’s no word yet on what her role will be on Grey’s Anatomy, but let’s keep our fingers crossed for a multi-episode arc at Seattle Grace.

Apparently, Summer Glau has realised that sci-fi shows are a dead-end on tv these days and she’s definitely at a turning point in her career; she wants to appear in mainstream tv shows and i’m glad producers like Shonda Rhimes are responding positively.

Don’t forget that Summer recently filmed a drama pilot for TNT (Susannah Charleson, author of the book the pilot is based from, granted the Summer Glau Wiki an exclusive interview).

Given that Summer has a commitment to TNT, i’m not sure there is room for a leading role in GA but maybe for a multi-episode arc as you said.

With two movies coming this Spring, the TNT pilot and a tv guestappearance in a hit show, 2012 may be her year :)

At last an article that doesn’t say : “the geeks and fanboys are in a frenzy since…”
    Thanks, it’s refreshing!

Summer Glau is indeed more used to play the damaged super-powered barely or not at all human characters who can be considered as generally good guys.

But she also played in Lifetime movie “Deadly Honeymoon”, where she was a complete bitch and is the completely opposite of Summers other characters and herself.

And the unnerving part is that she played her just as fantastically as her other characters, like if she’s always done this through her entire career. Its an amazing feat and I have no doubt that it doesn’t really matter what she plays, as long as she is willing to play a role she will always be fantastic in it. Because she is a fantastic actress who is doing art, not just somebody who is in for the fame despite having no talents at all.
