Gossip Girl Season 5 Episode 11 Rundown: Religion Burns the Affair

By : January 17, 2012

The affair is over? Yeah, right.

Gossip Girl is back and we can all breath a sigh of relief. Chuck (Ed Westwick) and Blair (Leighton Meester) are both fine after the accident in “Riding in Town Cars with Boys”.

Well, let’s be honest. Could anything really happen to Blair or Chuck? If something actually happened, such as death or extended coma, I’m sure fans would scream “bloody murder” and tune out. For the most part, Gossip Girl hinges on the Chair dynamic.

In actuality something did happen. Blair lost Louis’ (Hugo Becker) baby. So we should all be celebrating. That’s dark, I know. But, in TV world, this is awesome because it frees Blair to be with her true love – Chuck Bass. Also, there wasn’t much of a mourning period for the lost baby. Instead we jumped months into the future. Personally, I liked this time jump. It gave viewers a chance to get back to the light-hearted side of Upper East side living and sidestep tragedy. We had enough of that when Chuck lost his father.

The only mourning that we saw from Blair – with regard to the baby – was that she did not want to wear the same dress she was fitted for when she was pregnant.

Yet, “The End of the Affair?” seemed to still be shrouded in mist. Blair and Dan (Penn Badgley) were sneaking around together. Was Dair back? Hardly. It seems that true love continues to be a forbidden fruit on Gossip Girl. Now that the baby isn’t around to prevent Chuck and Blair’s union, it seems that religion has stepped in the way. During the flashbacks to Chuck’s time in the hospital, we saw that the doctors almost lost him. Then, Blair went to the chapel – and for some bizarre reason – promised to stay with Louis if Chuck survived. In the next moment, a nurse came in to tell Blair that Chuck would make it.

It was an odd roadblock to introduce, especially after Chuck and Blair had so adamantly declared their undying love in “Riding in Town Cars with Boys”. Everybody say, “Thank you Dan Humphrey” for the assist.

At first, both Louis and Chuck thought that Blair was cheating with Dan. They threatened to out the relationship to the Spectator. Fortunately, Nate’s (Chace Crawford) assistant stopped the blast from going out. Also, Blair revealed the truth to Serena (Blake Lively) about her holy conversion. So Serena was able to point Dair’s secrecy onto a faux re-budding romance between Dan and herself. Louis bought it, but Chuck knows that there is lie wrapped up in Blair’s secrecy.

So, what’s next on the Chair show?

Blair’s bachelorette party is coming up and Chuck wants to be back in her arms. Will Chuck resort to old tactics to win back Blair? Lets hope not. For starters, Blair loves the newly reborn Chuck, free from deception. Also, I’m looking forward to Chuck showing up at the royal wedding and saying, “I object.” Who is with me?

As for other story lines, it looks like the real Charlie Rhodes has finally made an appearance. Lily (Kelly Rutherford) hired an investigator to find Charlie only to discover that the real Charlie was at Julliard. Unfortunately, Lily still thinks that Ivy (Kaylee Defer) is Charlie. So Lily’s first meeting with her real niece went unnoticed.

Gossip Girl disappeared during the off-season and is now back, working with Nate at the Spectator. Gossip Girl helped nudged Nate in the right direction so that he would learn the truth about the accident. He was supposed to be in the wrecked car – not Chair.

The royal wedding is on the way. How would you like to see Chuck break up the wedding?

I honestly don’t know how they get out of this stupid situation they’ve written themselves into. I guess Blair could decide there is no God… or God could make a guest appearance and tell her he ships Chair… or her brain could grow back and she could realize how completely ridiculous she’s being.

Either way, I just need this absurd storyline to die in a fire.

If Chuck and Blair are happy, the majority of viewers are happy.  They’re just stringing us along cause they know we’ll keep tuning in until they give us Chair together.  So here we are GG writers, waiting and waiting and waiting.  I hope we get them back this season.

This show is but a shell of itself. I didn’t like this episode and the fact that they literally copied a movie and it’s music and stuck it in as a plot on GG is baffling. I was miffed at why they would waste not showing Blair have a breakdown over her child and I was even more annoyed with the fact that the never-ending obstacles between Chuck and Blair continue. I think Ed and Leighton Meester are the only thing good about this rotting carcass of a show. It’s sad that I used to love this show and now the writers have killed so much I loved about it. I’ll watch again if Chuck and Blair get back together. Until then, it’s not worth a second of my time

I really hope Blair snaps out of this Pact with God soon, because it’s driving me crazy that Chuck and Blair are finally in the perfect place to reunite – emotionally and with regards to maturity, etc. – and now there’s suddenly a ridiculous external article in the form of religion.

I think that once Blair finds out from Nate that the car accident was not fate but a mistake by Nate, she will see it is not all about religion and will turn to Chuck instead! Hopefully the wedding scene between the two of them also happens!
