‘Fringe’ Season 4 Episode 8 Review: Back to Where You’ve Never Been

By : January 14, 2012

Fringe returned this week with a phenomenal episode in “Back to Where You’ve Never Been.” Brilliant title by the way. In this episode, shape-shifters take a front seat on the other side and there’s quite a leveled balance of screen time for both the alternate universe and the current timeline. What a fantastic episode. Let’s break it down…

This week, a desperate Peter begs for help from a very hesitant and distant Walter to head to the other side. Instead, Olivia and Lee are by his side as Lee and Peter head over and finally come face to face with Walternate. It’s been too long since we have seen Walternate, has it not? Olivia thinks to use Peter’s trip to the other side as an opportunity for her to go and expose Walternate’s agenda against Peter’s best intentions. When Olivia’s mind is set, her mind is set. Peter should of all people should know this and should have been prepared for Olivia sending Lee on with him to fulfill her wishes. It was disappointing to see Peter so open to trusting Olivia’s word and not being cautious of Lee’s agenda. Lee, after all is not in the position that Peter is in. None of them are. The only person Peter can truly trust right now is himself. Walternate, full of surprises, seems to be one worth trusting for the time being, whether Peter likes it or not – which he already knows and has accepted so long as it gets him home. But once Peter gets home, it is unknown just what will become of Peter’s relationship with Walternate.

Walternate was not the only one that fans were thrilled to see this week. Peter was reunited with his mother, Elizabeth Bishop. She is one a smart lady. But a mother always knows and it did not take Elizabeth long to recognize her son, wrong universe/time line or not. It pains me to think what would have happened had Elizabeth not been there for Peter so thankfully, we do not have to go down that road. The adrenaline was already pumping at this point in the episode but it seemed as if the entire world stopped until those at Elizabeth’s door agreed to take her and Peter to Walternate. It really makes you think just how Elizabeth has been living all of this time under Walternate’s protection but also with her own authority in his business and in this world as well. All that said, while it was a delight to see Walternate and Elizabeth, we miss Walter! There’s only so much teasing we can take. Progress at a slightly quicker pace please.

Meanwhile, Olivia gets a premonition from an Observer but what he says is not good, “I have looked at all possible futures and in every one the result is the same. You have to die.” What in the world? Way to leave us hanging! If that isn’t a cliffhanger… but then again, it’s not that we didn’t already know that Olivia is going to die. She has been given this warning or premonition before but never like this has it been so definite. The Observer said that the result is the same no matter the future ahead. What a heavy truth to hear. So whether next season is the last of Fringe or a few seasons from now is the last, it seems that no matter how many universes Peter gets lost in, he will always be but Olivia will not. Hmm. Why exactly does she have to die in every future? What do you think about this seemingly inevitable outcome?

Finally, there was surprisingly not a whole lot of development on the shapeshifters front. This is fine by me. Shapeshifters have ruled Fringe before and the smaller dose, the better so as not to become irritated with this aspect of the show. As for this episode lacked… there was no Nina Sharp or Astrid this week which was rather disappointing but this is only the eighth episode, so there is sure to be plenty of these two as the season goes on. Some other points worth mentioning about “Back to Where You’ve Never Been…” the interaction between Lee and Alt Lee was intense and we loved every moment of it. Bring us more of this tension! It was a thrill! As for the glyph… JONES, what actually became of David Robert Jones? Could this be the answer to how Peter gets home? Also as a general point, you’re not the only one confused about what is going on among the universes and time lines. There is so much to take in each week and just when you think you’ve got the answer to a question, the writers flip you on your head for a ride you did not think could be possible. This is why Fringe is one of the best dramas on television today. The writers know how to keep us intrigued and thinking outside of the box and that is a gift that keeps on giving. So stay tuned for more!

It was a great episode i think Fringe will only get better from now on. Loved the doubles – Olivia/Altlivia Walter/Walternate Lincoln/Altlincoln – and Elizabeth and Jones. Waiting for next week to see if Broyles is a shapeshifter.

The Peter/Elizabeth/Walter scenes were what made this episode special, without them, the episode would have been as flat and emotionless as Olivia and Walter. It felt so good to take a break from them! I wouldn’t complain if the next 5-6 episodes were more like that.

Orla Brady is the best actress this show has ever had, they should use her more.

John Noble’s talent is scary. Every expression and every carefully crafted intonation were on point.

What a great episode.  We had a good use of the other characters for once, and less Olivia.  Loved all the altuniverse characters especially seeing Walternate, Broyles, and Elizabeth.  Enjoyed seeing over there again and REALLY enjoyed seeing John Noble play three different versions of Walter in this episode.  He is really tremendous and loved seeing the Bishop family together overthere.  All the scenes with Peter/Elizabeth/Walter were wonderful.

Well done show, as I haven’t really enjoyed this season to date.  I’ve just not connected with yellow Olivia and Walter to date, but I was able to connect with the other there characters this episode.  Bring on more episodes like this, when all the characters are used please.

As for this episode, I for one have seen enough Walter/Peter scenes or Walternate/Peter or Peter/Elisabeth, And the more I see them the more I dislike that Olivia has never had them and will never have them.

The way they isolated Olivia, and not even have done something about her backstory is shocking. There were so many options, with Charlie, Nina, Astrid or write in a decent family member, someone to whom she is allowed to show what she has gone through, but no everyhing is for the Bishops.

Worst of all is that we are now in season 4 episode 8, do you know who Olivia’s real father is?
Right never even mentioned. Olivia’s mother had to do with 3 times being mentions spread over 4 seasons, and the most in this season, stepfather same. And how did Olivia feel about being abused? Do they actually think of what being abused by several man (Walter/Bell and the stepfather) does to soeone in relations to men? Not really the way the wrote Olivia second half season 3, as a needy dependent woman.

And this season Nina after 2 scenes will turn evil, the woman she trusted the one abusing her, but that will just be Olivia as a victim right?
And off course the girlfriend, first Lincoln then Peter, which is very odd, given that Olivia had a John much older then her in the pilot ,and Lucas, also much older, which would be more in line with her childhoodtrauma.

Another thing Fringe does not deal with: the abuse of children, damaging for life by scientist.
Instead they portray Walter as the poor man, because he lost a son, while the same man did not give one bit about other peoples children.

Every time I read that the showrunners say that they great strong women, I think use them, give them great scenes to deal with Olivia’s past, but they do not write for them.

This will be the last season of Fringe, they once said that Olivia’s backstory would be in season 6, so we are never going to get them.
So instead of telling the most interesting story on Fringe and also a new fresh story, namely Who is Olivia,  we will just get the same Walter Peter dribble over and over again.

Final note: What an amazing actress Anna Torv is, she creates from nearly nothing these beautiful Olivia/Fauxlivia women. And with Olivia she manages to suggst the pain she still feels about her childhood, through how she does not show her emotions, and deals with trauma. Truly great acting.

September himself has erased or not erased Peter, and if you remember well Olivia was shot in the head in the futre 2026 by walternate, no peter to be seen.

So September who has a soft spot for Olivia , has done everything to find a timeline in this Blue Universe where there would be no one who would kill her violently.
In 2026 it was Walternate, in LSD it was mr. X in the balloon, so who will it be in the end? How about mr. Jones.

Olivia will have to die, to save the rest of both Universes, and then there will be one new universe, a better place to live.

  • John Smith

Ok, listen, Peter is not ever getting “home”. He is home. All that the Observers did was rewrite the timeline to erase Peter. He is where he is supposed to be. There is no going home. As for Jones, he lived because before Peter was erased he killed Jones in season 1, but without Peter Jones would live. The same exists for altBroyles. The reason Olivia is doomed to die is because the Observers erased Peter from the timeline and he won’t be there to protect her from whomever the killer is. But, the good news is that the Observers can’t take into account the unknown entity Peter. So, even if Olivia is meant to die because of no Peter it really doesn’t matter because Peter is back and will slowly reintegrate himself back into their lives.
