If you like the new dynamic of bad brother meets “badder” Salvatore brother on The Vampire Diaries, please raise your hand.
Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and Stefan (Paul Wesley) have come a long way since their days of high school bickering over the same girl. Instead of chastising each other on the war on Klaus (Joseph Morgan), they are working together to find a way to take him down. They also – for the most part – approve of each other’s actions. Apparently, Klaus’ presence has made hell freeze over. And, that’s a good thing.
While Damon unsympathetically rips out the hearts of hybrids, Stefan is willing to massacre them at public parties. He’s also willing to put his friends’ (are they really “friends” still?) lives in danger. The transformation of Stefan to worse brother has made TVD even more of a joy to watch and even more unpredictable.
In Episode 3.11, “Our Town”, we saw that Elena (Nina Dobrev) and Damon were dealing with “the kiss that shook Mystic Falls” in their own ways. Damon was walking around with a Kool-Aid smile while Elena – in her own words – was “just dealing with frustration.”
Can you say sexual frustration?
Alaric (Matt Davis) spotted Elena was working over the heavy bag with a lot of pent-up tension. Damon will be one lucky vampire when she finally cuts loose.
The mystery surrounding the fourth coffin continues to befuddle Bonnie (Kat Graham), Stefan and Damon. We know that Klaus has six siblings: Rebeka, one dead kid in the old world, one dead kid in the new world, Elijah and two others. So who is the fourth coffin? We may find out in “The Ties that Bind”, but for now we’re still left to wonder and speculate as to what’s locked away inside coffin number four. Stefan thinks that it could be the key to finally destroying Klaus.
Speaking of Klaus, there seems to be no end to hybrid fodder running around Mystic Falls. Damon ripped out one hybrid’s heart for lurking around the witches’ house, before making the point, “These hybrids really bringing the neighborhood down.” Later on Stefan sliced off hybrid Mindy’s head right in front of Klaus. It was one of the most blood gushing decapitations yet on TVD.
Stefan has decided to put Klaus on the defensive for the first time. Killing Mindy was the first part of the threat: get your hybrids out of town or they’ll be killed one by one.
Unfortunately for one vampire, Klaus thought that Stefan was bluffing. He urged Tyler (Michael Trevino) to bite Caroline (Candice Accola), knowing that a hybrid bite would kill her. Tyler said no and walked away, apparently showing that he had the stones to say no to the Original that sired him.
Yeah, right.
Bonnie, Elena and Matt (Zach Roerig) decided to hold a birthday funeral for Caroline. Since this was her first birthday since dying and becoming a vampire, she didn’t feel like celebrating. Her friends decided to help her bury her past life in so that she could move on.
It was all working out fine until Tyler showed up after Caroline texted him. The two went left the group for some alone time and then Tyler bit Caroline. So there you have it, Tyler is one hundred percent Klaus’ lackey.
Just when Elena went into the forest to search out Caroline, Stefan showed up show just how much of a bad ass he has become. He kidnapped Elena, put her in a car and started speeding towards the bridge where her parents had died and he had saved her life. He called up Klaus to let the Original hear Elena scream as she drank Salvatore blood on the way to the bridge. Sure Stefan wouldn’t outright kill Elena, but would he turn her into a vampire? Without Elena, Klaus would not be able to make any more hybrids.
Klaus realized that the threat was enough to call off his hybrids and back down from Stefan. Surprisingly, Damon later told Elena that he was proud of baby-bro for finally putting Klaus on the defensive.
As for Caroline, is new love brewing in the air? Her mother invited Klaus in so that he could heal her daughter. After Klaus had a heart-to-heart with her, he let her drink his blood. It was one of the few times we got to see Klaus show off any semblance of humanity. When Caroline awoke she had an expensive gift from Klaus waiting for her. It’s a little creepy, but perhaps Klaus is working a new angle on Caroline. She’s drunk his blood. What’s next?
The humans fell to the wayside in this episode. Tyler’s mom appears to be compelled by Klaus and protecting her son. Jeremy (Steven McQueen) has been compelled by Damon (under the request of Elena and Alaric) to leave town.
Now, Torrey DeVitto (Pretty Little Liars, One Tree Hill) is stepping into the picture as one of the Fel family, who is part of the council. But is she who she claims to be? Brian Walters, the guy who dumped her after prom and the person who writes off vamp deaths as animal attacks, was found dead with a stake in his chest. Brian wasn’t a vampire so who killed him and why? It looks like there may be more to Dr. Fel than meets the eye.
My personal choice for favorite moment of “Our Town” was the kidnapping scene. It was truly intense and I felt as threatened as Klaus did when Stefan was nearing the bridge.
