First things first, check out the new poster for The Dark Knight Rises featuring the image of Bane walking away from Batman’s broken cowl and the tagline “The Legend Ends” certainly sets the tone doesn’t it?

The next bit of exciting news is that there will be a six-minute prologue of The Dark Knight Rises shown before select IMAX screenings of Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol. Below is a listing of the 42 theaters in North America that will show the prologue on December 16th. Christopher Nolan said in a statement the reasoning why the prologue is being shown at IMAX screens only:

“Our experience on ‘The Dark Knight’ shooting and projecting IMAX 15 perf 65mm/70mm film was inspiring. The immersive quality of the image goes beyond any other filmmaking tool available, and in revisiting Gotham, we were determined to shoot even more of the movie in this unique format. Giving the fans an early look at an IMAX sequence is a great way to draw attention to what I believe will be an incredible way to experience our story when it comes out next summer.”

Now if you’re not in one of these markets or near any of these theaters, there is another way you can view the prologue. On December 13th, you can visit www.operationearlybird.com which shows a map and IMAX locations that will screen the footage and prompt you on how to get tickets. And if you visit www.thedarkknightrises.com there is an audio file hidden there that lists off a series of numbers. When those numbers are entered into the Operation Early Bird site, more locations show up.

I’ve yet to see the footage but from what I’ve heard it shows a hostage situation and footage of Bane and it’s apparently awesome. Comingsoon.net has a write-up of the prologue. The footage is introduced by Nolan who explains his exuberance to bring the big event movies back on the big screen (IMAX) where they belong. They’ve certainly found some interesting ways to use viral marketing to add mystery and anticipation to what should be next year’s biggest movie event.

The Dark Knight Rises has a release date of July 20, 2012 and stars Christian Bale, Tom Hardy, Anne Hathaway, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Marion Cotillard, Gary Oldman, Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman, Nestor Carbonell, Daniel Sunjata, Josh Pence and Juno Temple.
