Wouldn’t it be cool to see vintage Robocop blasting Klingons with his Auto-9? Well the J.J. Abrams’ sequel to Star Trek will not be a science fiction crossover but he is casting the original Robocop, Peter Weller in an unspecified role for the film. He joins a growing cast that is headlined by Benicio del Toro (Traffic) as the villain and Alice Eve (Entourage, She’s Out of My League) and the returning ensemble of John Cho, Karl Urban, Zoe Saldana, Chris Pine, Simon Pegg, Anton Yelchin and Zachary Quinto.
But this is not the first time Weller will encounter the United Federation of Planets. Back in 2005 he played John Frederick Paxton in two episodes of Star Trek: Enterprise. Could he be playing Paxton once again? It would work in the timeline as the character eventually died on the short-lived television series. Whoever he plays, fans can hope it’s a prominent role.Star Trek 2 is set for a May 17, 2013 release date.
The sci-fi icon has been busy of late having landed feature roles in Forced to Fight, which just wrapped and Jean-Claude Van Damme’s new film Dragon Eyes (you know you can’t resist). We all remember him fondly as Stan Liddy in Dexter, and Christopher Henderson in 24. There were the notable guest spots on Abrams’ sci-fi cult-hit Fringe and USA’s Psych. Weller has also carefully worked on his craft as a TV director. He responsible for a select few of BuzzFocus TV favorites like Homicide: Life on the Street, Monk, and directed two episodes, “Hands” and “Dorylus” of the fourth season of Kurt Sutter’s biker gang drama, Sons of Anarchy.
While not much is known about Weller’s role in Star Trek 2, nor will we given Abrams’ secretive nature, fans can be rest assured that he always plays a bad ass.
