The fall finale of Fringe was not as fulfilling of a fall finale as many may have anticipated it to be. Perhaps that is because the baseball game pushed what would have been the real fall finale to the Winter premiere? Regardless of this episode being a fall finale or not, this week’s episode had the potential to be so much more engaging.
“I used to be believe a few months ago that I understood the world we lived in.” – Lincoln Lee
“Wallflower” opened up with Lincoln Lee and Olivia leaning on each other after running into each other, possibly sparking a love triangle that the majority of fans will certainly not be rooting for. Then again, this isn’t Peter’s time line, so does it even matter? To him, it doesn’t. As he said, “The Olivia you’re talking about? That’s not my Olivia.” So is it safe to say that Olivia and Lincoln Lee were destined to be together in this time line or is that rushing things along?
Speaking of destined… Peter did not get any closer to getting back home in this episode. In fact, viewers only caught him twice in this episode. Far too little screen time for Joshua Jackson in such a crucial time for his character. There had better be a lot more Peter in the second half of the season. It is honestly more worrying to see Peter have a babysitter protecting civilians from him than discovering whose soul mate is whose in this time line.
So after an invisible force kills a man and takes his pigments, the Fringe division is on a mission to solve the case and of course, Massive Dynamic connected to this troubled boy. How much does Nina Sharp not know about what’s going on under her supervision, past or present? Or is she just a pathological liar because that wouldn’t be surprising given her history. As a matter of fact, everyone working at Massive Dynamic should be more closely monitored than Peter ever should be. Why isn’t the FBI secretly keeping close tabs on them and doing research on this company? What ever happened to keep your enemies closer? Because Massive Dynamic isn’t an enemy… until they are. This company has far too many secrets. We all know that U-Gene is not the last of them. It’s ashame U-Gene had to die just to be seen. That’s powerful.
And Eugene is not the only one trapped in his own nightmare. It only took the entire episode to find out why Olivia is having migraines but what we’ve got made this fall finale worth it. As mentioned before, keep your enemies closer. Whether it is Olivia, Lincoln Lee, or somebody else who discovers what Nina is up to, the repercussions of this act are what viewers will be talking about until January. Overall, this week’s episode was slow moving and depressing but what happened in the final moments will carry us through this hiatus! What did you think?
