Weeds Season 7 Episode 12 Review (Finale Lead-in): Matricide on the Horizon

By : September 20, 2011

In the past few episodes, Weeds has shed the dour past of the Esteban days and transformed itself back into the comedic powerhouse of old. Admittedly, I’ve stayed on the fence for most of the season. Does Weeds deserve an eighth season and if so should the eighth season be its final season?

After Episode 12, “Qualitative Spatial Reasoning”, I’m actually mildly interested in seeing more Weeds. The episode, written by Stephen Falk, was humorous from start to finish. This is a feat we haven’t seen since the Conrad days (Romany Malco), back when Jenji Kohan could do no wrong and Nancy Botwin (Mary-Louise Parker) did nothing but wrong. Sure, there have been good episodes here and there, but the story arc was always hampered by a lack of direction. Remember when Nancy was trafficking people instead of drugs?

Now, we have an excellent story of son vs mother. Nancy has effectively forced Silas (Hunter Parrish) into a war that will most likely result in her undoing – again. Episode 12 ended with Nancy on top. She had magically whisked her way into the loving arms of the SEC, much to the commission’s chagrin. She’s kicked off a new drug business complete with a PR represenative and corporate funding to target East Hampton’s elite buyers. Royal Pains eat your heart out. The new operation is called “Shhh!” and it’s a full delivery service, featuring models worthy of Maxim Magazine. She’s even getting ready to move into a new lavish apartment that looks like something out of Martha Stewart show. It’s only a matter of time before young Stevie is back in her embrace so that she can finally raise a son rightfully wrong (does that even make sense, probably not but this is Nancy Botwin).

Unfortunately for Nancy, her rise to the top is something of a whimsical Scarface story, the only difference is she’s no Tony Montana. Heylia (Tonye Patano) is out for blood after Demetri (Pablo Schreiber) stole her MILF weed and offered it to Nancy. It was a hysterical scene to see Demetri covered in compressed bags of marijuana, while Nancy walked in during a bout of role play. However, Nancy quickly realized that her fight with Silas was beginning to cross the line.

Heylia isn’t the only one out for Nancy’s backside. Emma (Michelle Trachtenberg) has turned rat to Detective Oullette (Machael Harney), letting the officer know that Nancy is the bigger drug game he needs to worry about. Is Emma operating independently of Silas? Right now, it seems as though this is all part of his plan take down his mother once and for all.

Silas’ final play against his mom is to bring in Nancy’s sister and Stevie’s current guardian. We’ll have to see how that plays out as we move into the Season 7 finale. At the end of Season 6, Nancy gave herself over to the feds. Now, Nancy may have to go back to life on the run.

Be sure to tune into the Weeds Season 7 finale next week to see if Silas’ plan to take down Nancy comes to fruition.
