After chasing down the likes of Vin Diesel and Paul Walker in Fast Five, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is ready to take on another real American hero.
Johnson has officially joined Paramount’s upcoming G.I. Joe: Cobra Strikes as Roadblock, the resident Joes machine gunner and cook who was left out of the first film, G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra. The Rock, who has steamrolled his way to legitimate action hero status with films like The Scorpion King, Walking Tall and Faster, is just about perfect for this role.
First of all, of course, he has the physical size to play Roadblock, who once worked as a bouncer before enlisting in the Army. And, if you’re talking about the Eighties cartoon version of the character, you’ll note that The Rock has the necessary charisma to play him. Roadblock is best known for making all of his statements in rhymes, funny ones at that.
With popularity levels that make him a viable leading man, The Rock is a big score for the sequel, which will no doubt be met with skepticism. The first film, directed by Stephen Sommers, was a large disappointment and had Joes fanboys screaming foul. Changes are already on the menu for the sequel, which will feature Jon Chu (Justin Bieber: Never Say Never) donning the director’s chair and Joseph Gordon-Levitt not be returning as Cobra Commander.
As this is good news, it’s only appropriate to end with what will inevitably be the film’s catch phrase: Can you smell what Roadblock is cooking?
