Brian Bendis to Scribe Marvel MMO – Plus Details of Game

It was only a matter of time, as The Big Two often do, that Marvel would be developing their own MMO game to rival that of Sony’s DCU Online game which was released earlier this year. While Sony employed comic greats Jim Lee, Geoff Johns, and Marv Wolfman to help build the story and look of the game, Marvel along with game developers and designers Gazillion has chosen “architect,” Brian Michael Bendis as the head writer of the game and will work with Andy Collins, Lead Story Designer at Gazillion. Bendis was welcomed to a press conference in San Francisco Thursday night.

“The reason I was so desperate to be a part of this is that I am a big believer that the Marvel Universe is more than this fantasy universe, or a fictional universe of characters, it’s kind of a lifestyle for a lot of people,” said Bendis. “It’s a big part of their identity. It’s the perfect way to accentuate that experience to make Marvel more part of your life. So many people are so passionate about the characters, well now you can express your passion in a completely different way, in a complete social experience with your friends. It reminds me of what Stan Lee did in the 60’s by making the audience part of Marvel. He was the first person to say, ‘Come on into Marvel! The letter columns are all about you.’ In an MMO it’s an extension of that philosophy.”

The game will allow players to experience the epic events from all the eras of the Marvel catalog of history and let users play the actual Marvel characters as opposed to creating your own character. “We believe that separates us from the pack.” Bendis added.

Some of the characters players that were teased as playable characters included Captain America, Thor, Iron Man, Spider-Man, and even Squirrel Girl. But the dilemma of being able to play the main characters of the MMO is that a large quantity of people will be choosing to play as the same characters. But the Gazillion was insistent that users not settle to play as sidekicks and that they would rather players live that dilemma and build a story around the possibility of several hundred Spider-Mans and Wolverines coexisting than to play as sidekicks. Bendis joked that it would be first come, first serve and that “The first person to buy the game would get Spider-Man and the rest would be shit out of luck.”

Other details of the game included:
• There will be no monthly subscription fee and Gazillion and Marvel want to make it a legitimate, free experience.
• There may be opportunities to buy things within the game.
• There will be a large sampling of characters, heroes and villains, women and men that will be playable.
• Dr. Doom is the main villain.
• It will be developed as a PC Platform at first and then consoles to be determined.
• Development has been ongoing for a year and are still a ways out.
• No release date has been set.
• No specific universe will be chosen but there will be plenty tapped from the 616 universe.

More details will be leaked out through Gazillion and Marvel’s twitter feeds and a very specific feed for the game: @MMMSociety

So let’s hear from you Marvel Zombies! Is Bendis’ participation make you more or less excited about a Marvel MMO? And what about the ability to play as actual Marvel heroes and villains? Do you think it could work or are you expected to see an entire screen full of Red Hulks? Share your thoughts below.
