There’s not much that can be said about the legendary Dragon BallDragon Ball: Season 5 features the final challenges of Goku before Dragon Ball Z in a 31-episode set on 5 discs. Although there are a few filler episodes this is the ultimate must see collection for any DBZ fan.
Dragon Ball: Season 5 takes place after the final battle with Piccolo, but don’t think he’s out of the picture yet. A new Piccolo emerges called Piccolo Jr. who ends up becoming one of Goku’s most trusted allies in the DBZ series. The season kicks off with Goku on a quest to rescue his friends from the land of the dead. This is also the first time that Goku journeys to Korin Tower to meet Kami in an attempt to resurrect Shenron and restore the seven Dragon Balls.
This collection also brings fans the final World Martial Arts Tournament before the DBZ series. The tournament was much more prevalent in the original franchise and only later took root in the DBZ franchise during the “Super Cell Saga.” This is Goku’s moment to shine and finally become the World’s Greatest Martial Artist. Watching the battle between Goku and Piccolo Jr. will give DBZ fans a greater appreciation of the initial DBZ rivalry between Goku and Piccolo. It also makes Piccolo’s eventual mentorship of Gohan that much more important to the longevity of the franchise.
Dragon Ball is without a doubt one of the greatest Anime series of all time. The rich character development that takes place throughout the series as Goku and his friends move from childhood to adulthood is a sheer pleasure to watch. To truly appreciate the DBZ franchise, you MUST WATCH this series. There’s no other way around it. Dragon Ball wrote the book on bringing to life memorable Anime characters and relationships, with powers that awakened the inner martial artist in all of us.
Unfortunately, just like previous Dragon Ball sets, there are no noteworthy special features that befit a franchise of this caliber. At least you can watch the English voice track with the original Japanese music. This is a treat for anyone who caught an episode here and there of the original series in Japanese – back in the 80s/90s before the advent of DVD and the partnership with Funimation.
Special Features:
- Remastered and Digitally Restored
- English Voice Track with Original Japanese Music
- Marathon Play Special Feature
- Textless Songs
