Game Accessory Review: Primal PC Gaming Headset

By : June 6, 2010

If you consider yourself a true gamer, then you know how important audio is to the overall gaming experience. I’m not simply referring to musical simulation titles like Rock Band or Guitar Hero, but also more hardcore titles like first or third person shooters. Hearing the sound of your enemy falling victim to a successful no-scope is one of life’s guilty pleasures. Console gamers have the benefit of TV speakers or their home entertainment system audio setup to hear these glorious sounds. PC and portable gamers, by contrast, are at a disadvantage. PC’s only come with their internal speakers. So, PC gamers are forced to buy external speakers, while iPhone, DS and PSP gamers typically resort to basic earbuds/plugs to game.

primalheadsetBut, what does a PC gamer do when they’re forced to turn off their speakers because the kids are sleeping or so as to not disturb the neighbors? What does a portable gamer do if they simply want to hear a higher quality sound from their device?

Rude Gameware has introduced a new gaming headset called the Primal PC Gaming Headset. The Primal Gaming Headset comes with a detachable mic, so you can use it for Skype and online chat or simply remove the mic and take it on the go. The microphone and headset are separated into individual 3.5 mm audio jacks so that it can plug into any portable device and be used as a standard headset. The headset features a closed-ear cushion design that allows you to adjust the size for comfort.

What makes this headset different from your standard headset and mic peripheral is the added bass-boost rumble feature. The headset allows you to turn on and off the bass boost as well as adjust the sound and rumble levels. For the bass to work, you’ll need to attach a battery pack or use a USB connector, both of which are included. If you’re on the go and don’t need the bass boost, you can simple leave it off. There is one caveat for PC gamers. Plugging your headset inside the headphone output of your computer speakers and using the USB attachment for bass creates feedback. Obviously this isn’t very nice to have while your gaming. So you will need to plug your headphones either directly into the speaker output of your computer or you can use the battery pack, which won’t generate the feedback.

Overall, the Primal Headset delivers awesome audio, especially on the DS and iPhone. I can’t emphasize how much more enjoyable it was to play games like Dementium II through the Primal headset versus using standard earbuds. The headset makes your gaming experience come alive. Also, the headset simply delivers a crisper sound for iPhone gaming. As for the bass boost, I’m not sure what the health implications are in having your headset rumble. So, you may want to be cautious in turning the bass all the way up.
