Lost is about two things: questions and answers.
Were the survivors of Oceanic flight 815 saved? Yes and no.
It seems that the survivors were able to end their time-torn tale. Well, at least their alternate-universe doppelgangers did. In the season 6 premiere, “LA X” parts 1 and 2, we saw Lost from two realities: one where Oceanic Flight 815 didn’t crash and a second where all the survivors were brought back to the present time. On the surface, Damon Lindelof may have pulled a Star Trek and created an alternate reality resulting from the nuke.
In the alternate reality where the survivors didn’t crash, Jack (Matthew Fox) seems to be the only one to vaguely remember anything about what happened before. There is a moment when he confronted Desmond (Henry Ian Cusick) on the flight, where it looks as though Jack may actually know him. This could simply be because the two had met on a track field years before, or because Jack is remembering his alternate life on the Island. Strangely, Desmond’s presence on the plane indicated that there might have been more dramatic repercussions to the survivors nuking the Island. For starters, the Island is now underwater.
In the reality we have been following since Lost season 1, Jack’s actions have inevitably resulted in Juliet’s (Elizabeth Mitchell) death. However, Juliet affirms that Jack’s actions actually did work. After her death, Juliet’s spirit reveals to Miles (Ken Leung) the words, “It worked.” This doesn’t do much to help the survivors of Oceanic 815. Hurley (Jorge Garcia) brings them to the Temple under the order of Jacob’s spirit to save Sayid (Naveen Andrews). The leaders of the temple immerse Sayid’s body in what appears to be a healing fountain. Unfortunately, the water has turned brown and lost its potent healing powers. As the temple patrons bring Sayid out of the water, dead, they hold him up in the symbol of a crucifix. Of course, this symbolism is quickly revealed when Sayid miraculously comes back to life.
We officially know who the Smoke Monster is. Well, sort of. It would seem that the Smoke Monster, now using the guise of John Locke (Terry O’Quinn) was Jacob’s friend on the Island several centuries ago. He also just happens to be the only “living entity” who know something the truth about Richard Alpert (Nestor Carbonell).
In Lost Season 6 episode 3, “What Kate Does,” the Kate (Evangeline Lilly) who didn’t crash continues her escape, while Jack must make sense of the events at the Temple.
