EW.com delivered the goods today, providing a first look at Freddie Prinze, Jr. as the head of CTU New York’s field operations team in the 8th Season of 24.

Freddie Prinze, Jr. on Fox's 24

The former teen heartthrob plays Cole Ortiz, head of field operations for a reconstituted CTU in New York City, where the action takes place in the upcoming season. “We’ve attempted to call him a young Jack Bauer, but he really is his own character,” says 24 executive producer Howard Gordon.

Much of Prinze’s storyline concerns his character’s romantic relationship with Dana Walsh, an agent at CTU played Katee Sackhoff. (Sci-fi nerds, try to contain yourself!) “We’ve got a really interesting story to tell with these two,” adds Gordon. “What we learn in short order is that she may not be who she says she is, and it has to do with her past, which comes back to haunt her in the present. This wonderful Boy Scout is about to learn that the woman who he’s about to marry—she’s kind of the perfect girl—has secrets. In the tradition of 24, work and personal lives don’t mix.”

Cole is a big fan of Jack Bauer (he just scored some early points in my book) and from the looks of things, he’s just like a Season 1 Bauer: Head of field operations and having relations with a fellow agent. Tsk, tsk, tsk – you CTU people really love to hook up whilst averting terrorist attacks.

But you know he’s gonna have to get out in the field for some real action too. I’m actually rooting for the Prinze to be a good wingman to Jack. And let’s be honest with ourselves, Ortiz will start out in charge, but Jack will takeover as soon as they convince him to “get back in the game.”

But he should know that he has big shoes to fill. Being Jack’s wingman isn’t something that should be taken lightly. The once-great Tony Almeida was legendary at running flank. And how about Chase Edmunds (James Badge Dale)? Some of the most exciting moments of Season 3 were when Jack and Chase were running down baddies together (all this, of course, before Mr. Edmunds lost his hand). And we can never forget the awesome Curtis Manning, who had the honor for a few seasons.

So, here’s hoping that the 8th Season of 24 is even better than the first. The Fox show is back in January – be there.

Freddie Prinze a Bauer wingman … I Don’t like it.
I give him 6 hours tops before he bites the bullet

It is going to take a hell of a lot to respark my interest in 24 this year after the last two abysmal seasons. 24 is a show I’ve watched from the beginning, but in hindsight seasons 1 and 5 are the only ones I can feel justified in saying I like. Freddie Prince Jr. isn’t going to do it for me, and that story element sounds pretty crappy. Hopefully Fox has more in store.
