So, the big question everyone is asking is, can “Gossip Girl” survive a third season when facing up against “Heroes.” Ratings have already begun to slip this season, even though, according to the CW, Season 3’s premiere outperformed last year’s premiere in target women 18-34.
Although the lighthearted nature of “Gossip Girl” is there, the drama just seems to be lacking. Blair and Chuck’s back and forth rivalry has taken a fruitful turn as the two now work as cohesive yin and yang duo. The potential drama surrounding Scott meeting Rufus didn’t really have a climax. Instead, Vanessa was once again left alone. Is this plot line done? Not at all. Everyone’s rooting for Georgina to spice things up in the coming episodes. After Dan parted ways with her, under Serena’s advisement, Georgina’s out for blood.
The core characters have also been sidelined for newer relationships. Carter has taken on a larger role this season, while Nate has been somewhat pushed aside. Bree has been introduced as Nate’s love interest. But, instead of any “serious” drama escalating from their rival families, it appears that Bree’s story arc will be more intertwined with Carter’s arc. At the end of Episode 3, “The Lost Boy,” Bree claims that she will use Carter as her means of getting back in with her family.
The series has definitely grown, as have the characters, but the heart of the show always lied in gossip and exposing New York’s socialite crowd. Unfortunately, we’ve hardly seen any of those elements come to the forefront. The question now remains, will the CW pull the plug? Monday nights are a difficult spot for a show like “Gossip Girl,” especially when pit against “Heroes.” Will the CW be able to see past that? I only hope that if “Gossip Girl” does get an early ending, the CW lets the creative team wrap up the show with a Gossip Girl revealing story arc.
In Gossip Girl Season 3 Episode 4, “Dan de Fleurette,” it’s the first day of school at Constance Billard which means it’s also time for Jenny to take her rightful place as the new Queen Bee. Unfortunately for Jenny, Blair is more than happy to intervene when news reaches her that she may be needed back at Constance.
Meanwhile, Lily returns home to Rufus and her family to find that things are definitely not as she left them. Plus, a famous movie actress, Olivia Burke (recurring guest star Hilary Duff - A Cinderella Story, Material Girls, Lizzie McGuire), enrolls at NYU in hopes of having a somewhat normal college experience, and is assigned to be Vanessa’s roommate. Guest star Tyra Banks (The Tyra Show, America’s Next Top Model) appears as Ursula, an actress co-starring in Olivia’s movie and someone who Serena befriends.
