Nine out of ten times, when high school teen dramas make the transition to college life, the heart of the show is invariably lost. Characters mature. Fans disappear. Writers return to old story arcs to try and reclaim what was lost. And, the show fades into obscurity.
“Gossip Girl” is at the pivotal moment in its lifespan. Not only are the characters making the transition to college life, but the show is also entering its third season – hump season. Get past the third season and be remembered forever. Have a lackluster third season and say goodbye to cast and crew. So far, all things equal, the first few episodes of the season have maintained the entertainment value of “Gossip Girl” thanks to the richly developed characters.
Now that the New York’s favorite socialite crowd has had its first week on NYU’s campus, we are all left wondering if their freshman year will be their last. Georgina (Michelle Trachtenberg) is back in the picture, with one vindictive claw clutching Blair Waldorf’s (Leighton Meester) throat and the other wrapped cradling Dan Hunphrey’s (Penn Badgley) crotch. We no longer have to worry about Serena van der Woodsen getting jealous of Dan, that issue has been nipped in the bud by Lily Bass (Kelly Rutherford) and Rufus Humphrey’s (Matthew Settle) marriage. However, emotional-inter family drama isn’t off the books this year between the van der Woodsens and the Humphreys. Scott lurks in the shadows, feigning a relationship with Vanessa in order to get close to Rufus and Dan. Who will Vanessa turn to when Scott breaks her heart and Dan is stuck in the middle?
Chuck (Ed Westwick) seems to have matured, and is apparently fine with a monogamous relationship with Blair. How long will that last? The clock is ticking. Blair is set for an emotional breakdown, having been thrust to the bottom of the social pecking order by Georgina. Chuck may be fine with Blair in good times, but what about in times of war?
The real question still remains, where is the elusive Gossip Girl (Kristen Bell)? We’ve heard her narration, but we haven’t seen anything worthy of attention come out on her message board yet this season. Hopefully, with Georgina on the prowl, Gossip Girl will soon spring out of hiding.
In Gossip Girl Season 3 Episode 3, “The Lost Boy,” it’s an Upper East Side face-off when Blair (Leighton Meester) and Chuck (Ed Westwick) both set their sights on a particular item up for bid at Sotheby’s and the personal stakes are high. Serena (Blake Lively) suspects that Carter (guest star Sebastian Stan) may be up to his old habits, Georgina (Michelle Trachtenberg) takes an interest in Dan (Penn Badgley), and Vanessa (Jessica Szohr) begins to suspect that something isn’t quite right with Scott (guest star Chris Riggi).
it was a good episode.
i was rooting for chuck and blair since — Godknowswhen and when they did end up with each other, of course i was delighted.
But wondering what’ll happen in season3,
i thought their relationship would get..boring.
and i thought wrong.
