Clay may be the President of SAMCRO, with Jax as the VP, but no one runs the Sons of Anarchy like Gemma.
After getting gang-raped by A.J. Weston and his band of supremacist miscreants, Gemma is left battered in an abandoned warehouse. Chief Wayne Unser is the first to discover Gemma. Even in a state of shock, nothing can stop Gemma from doing what she does best: being the stolid matriarch of SAMCRO. Gemma realizes that if she goes to Clay and Jax and informs them about the rape, that the white supremacists would win. It’s twisted street logic, but street logic has kept Gemma alive this long and she isn’t ready to abandon it. Gemma decides to confide in Tara and Unser. They are privy to the truth she cannot tell her own family. Unser decides to run Gemma’s car into a barricade in order to blame her condition on a car accident.
Now facing death, Unser has developed a new sense of loyalty as he tries to atone for past deeds by helping Gemma. Lies, as a means of reconciliation, are once again law in Charming. While the Chief works through his personal penance, Tara has moved from being a thorn in Gemma’s side to the matriarch’s personal confidant.
The rift between Clay and Jax is growing. The Mayans have discovered the dead body of one of their members. After Jax blasted open Donna’s falsely accused killer, he had left nine fingers up on the dead body: the sign of the Niners. Now the Mayans want to war with the Niners, leaving SAMCRO stuck in the middle as the weapons supplier. When Clay confronts Jax about his decision, Jax simply responds, “Spur of the moment… seemed like the right thing… sure you can understand.”
Unfortunately, Jax is about to learn a hard lesson in defiance. His ruse has played right into the hands of the supremacists who raped Gemma. When Ethan Zobelle learns about SAMCRO’s misdealing between the Mayans and the Niners, he informs the Mayans that SAMCRO is back in business with their rivals. Surprisingly, Ethan has kept this little deed a secret from A.J., who most likely wouldn’t tolerate getting into bed with the enemy even for “the cause.”
As for Luann, she’s out fifth grand. A rival porn filmmaker, Georgi (Tom Arnold), is trying to steel her girls. Jax decides to make a show of muscle and threaten Georgi to stay away from Luann’s girls. Now Luann has to partner SAMCRO to stay on top of the porn business.
Standout moments of this episode include the scene when Tig wakes up in the club with a girl on top of him. Her legs are spread in his face, but when the phone rings, he tosses the girl onto the floor and says, “I love you.”
During Luann’s rivalry with Georgi, SAMCRO attacks Georgi’s production set armed with bats. Jax tackles Georgi with his bat and says that if Georgi doesn’t back off, his next movie will be ‘Conseco does Georgi.’
Sons of Anarchy Season 2 continues to impress. Each episode is more thrilling than the next. With the bar set so high this early in the season, I can’t imagine what kind of season finale we’ll be in for.
