It’s official. HBO is cementing plans to bring another potentially great original series to its subscribers.

The cable network has ordered 12 episodes of the new drama, “Boardwalk Empire,” with the pilot episode directed by none other than Martin Scorsese.

According to The Hollywood Reporter:

Boardwalk Empire is set in 1920 at the dawn of Prohibition and chronicles the life and times of Nicky Thompson, the undisputed ruler of Atlantic City, who was equal parts politician and gangster.

On paper, this series sounds like it will be nothing short of awesome. Nicky Thompson will be played by great character actor, Steve Buscemi and the pilot was writtten by Terence Winter, who wrote/co-wrote many episodes of The Sopranos. Winter will also co-executive produce the series with Scorsese and a few others, including Mark Wahlberg.

I love True Blood and Entourage, but HBO needed another gritty show since The Wire and The Sopranos went off the air in 2008 and 2007 respectively.
