What is going on with the poster-girl for Woman’s Liberation, Peggy Olson?

After finally confessing to Pete Campbell that she and Pete had a love child, Peggy seems to be falling right back into old habits. In Season 3 Episode 2, Peggy goes out on her own with the explicit intention of finding a one-night stand. The mark was a college student, who was long on conversation but short on Trojans.

Is Peggy’s self-esteem really that low, that she would risk another child out of wedlock? It appeared as though Ms. Olson wouldn’t sleep with the college student since he didn’t pack any birth control, but a time dash later suggested otherwise. Don Draper continues to have faith in the young copywriter, even though some times she doesn’t have faith in herself. Who could blame Peggy, living in a world dominated by men? She goes to work, and comes home to an empty house. The only people in her life she could turn to is a priest, who knows her secret, and Joan, whom Peggy has slowly been trying to build an uneasy friendship with. Because of this, Peggy remains in isolation.

Peggy was the first woman at Sterling Cooper to break through the corporate glass ceiling, while Joan Holloway fell victim to Harry Crane’s old-school-men-first-business practice. If the two could somehow find a common ground, Sterling Cooper would have a sharp change of face. So, we’re rooting for Peggy to not only make the right decisions, but to also beat the Ad Men at their own game.

We haven’t seen any fallout or confrontation between Peggy and Pete yet this season, so, hopefully, Peggy will weather that storm as well. A marital alliance with Pete, could mean a career boost, or two steps backward for woman’s lib if Pete ever became jealous of Peggy’s career over his own.

In Mad Men Season 3 Episode 3, “My Old Kentucky Home,” the writers fight off boredom when they are forced to work after hours. Roger hosts a party while Joan and Greg host a party of their own. Sally has a run in with Grandpa.
