After nearly two seasons of canoodling with the Mexican Mafia and six months of living “how the other half lives,” Nancy both won and lost her engagement to a Mexican crime boss.
It was only a matter of time before unforeseen forces toppled Nancy’s House of Straw. But, who would have thought that it would all have happened in Episode 6, “A Modest Proposal.”
The Botwins have all given Esteban their blessing to propose to Nancy. Well, that’s every Botwin except for Andy, who has been reduced to a bearded Ms. Pac-Man playing hermit. Nancy gleefully accepts Esteban’s proposal and rushes to do two things: make peace with Andy and rub the news in Guillermo’s face. Unfortunately, Guillermo seems to have an ace up his sleeve that has yet to be revealed. He’s still confident that he will get the upper hand on Nancy, especially with Captain Till out of the way.
Alas, “Nothing is exactly as it seems. Nor is it otherwise.” The words were etched into a baby-rocker gift box from Esteban in Episode 5, “Van Nuys.” Now, the meaning of those words is all too clear. Esteban was visited by a woman, who may be Nancy’s downfall She strolls into Esteban’s house announced accompanied by a bodyguard. After exchanging a heated argument in Spanish with Esteban, the Mexican crime boss and Nancy’s would-be fiancé calls off the engagement.
Why? From the exchange between the two, it would appear that this woman, Pilar Zuazo (Kate del Castillo), is also in a Mexican crime family. Pilar claims to have invested time and money in Esteban, and has accused him of throwing it all away by shacking up with a gringa, white woman. So the investment in Esteban leads us to believe that she is in a family or bears a rank that is above Esteban’s own.
What’s next? Well Esteban has been given two options by Pilar. He has embarrassed his home country of Mexico through this gringa-love affair. Now, Esteban must choose between himself and Nancy.
Unfortunately, Esteban chose himself. You would think that a Mexican boss would have some cojones to stand up for the woman he allegedly loves, but business and personal welfare seems to come first.
In Weeds Season 5 Episode 7, “Where the Sidewalk Ends,” Nancy must deal with the ramifications of Pilar’s visit.
