Earlier this year, Marvel announced a deal with Cartoon Network for the new animated series, Marvel Super Hero Squad. The show, like its plastic toy counterparts, features some of Marvel’s most popular heroes and villains shrunk down in size and pumped up in cuteness. Think Muppet babies, but with Magneto and Iron Man instead of Kermit and Miss Piggy.
In conjunction with the show, THQ will be releasing a video game that follows the series’ stories and characters. As part of the THQ Holiday Preview, we had a chance to speak with THQ brand manager, Jenny Lin, about the game and test drive the Wii release.

The game offers two styles of play, including an Adventure mode with 6 different character stories and battle mode similar to Super Smash Brothers. The Adventure mode involves jumping from platform to platform and beating down swarms of henchmen, while the Battle mode pits 4 characters against each other on a round platform. Players are timed as they get points for knocking opponents out of the ring.
Like the animated series, the game is targeted towards a grade school audience so the controls simple and easy to learn. Move your character around with the Wii-mote and Nunchuck, then jump, punch, and blast your way through the level. For those playing on the Wii version, you can shake the remote to unleash a combo attack if done right.

Multiplayer is available in both modes, but it became difficult for the camera to keep both players visible in the story mode. This isn’t a problem with only one player because you can swing the camera around you using the D pad. In battle mode, you can compete against up to four people at once, but online play will not be supported.
The graphics and sound were strong and helped accent the cuteness of the pint sized action heroes. Hopefully, the animated series can do as good of a job equating Wolverine with cuddly teddy bear as the game does. Because, Wolverine should give you warm and fuzzy feelings deep inside, right?
Marvel Super Hero Squad is a title to look out for this fall and will be available for the Wii, PSP, PS2, or DS.
