The much anticipated Season 3 premiere of “Saving Grace” did not disappoint. Season 2 ended with the execution of Leon Cooley, who Grace (Holly Hunter)went to see after discovering that he was a friend to her sister, and Earl connecting Grace with a new woman to help. This woman, who remains “Jane Doe” throughout the episode, doubts the existence of both Earl and Grace. Grace enlists the help of Ham to distract Travis Wayne, Jane Doe’s boyfriend, by towing his truck. While the boyfriend is away, Grace tries to get through to her. Unfortunately, Travis gets away from Ham by hitting him with the gun and stealing Ham’s gun and badge. He then kills a man on the street, and then returns home to shoot Jane Doe.

Earl (Leon Rippy) holds Jane until the paramedics can arrive, leaving a bloody feather at the crime scene that Grace’s best friend, Rhetta (Laura San Giacomo), conceals from evidence. The house becomes the center of a full-scale investigation, which uncovers a local anti-government cell. The cell’s plan was to use the funeral of a fallen officer, who they killed, as the testing ground for a bio-weapon. Thanks to the amazing detective skills of Grace and her squad, the plan is foiled and Oklahoma City is safe once again.
What made the “Saving Grace” Season 3 premiere great wasn’t just the crime fighting. Grace’s unconventional police work, guided as she is by a “last-chance angel,” her fiery romance and deep friendships make this show so much fun to watch.
Her relationship with Ham is both perfect and impossible. They’re both cops, work well together, and understand the stresses of the job. Ham’s divorce was just finalized and he’s now looking to Grace for a wife and family. But that’s not how Grace sees herself.
After a practical joke reveals that there was no actual tape of Ham and Grace having sex on a bridge, the news reporter and her cop boyfriend, Butch, announce their engagement. Ham (Kenny Johnson) is so excited for them, but Ham and Grace exchange glances across the room foreshadowing more serious conversations and hard truths to come.
