Not since Tony Soprano was running around North Jersey has HBO seen ratings from an original series like it did this past Sunday night.

True Blood’s Season 2 premiere episode, “Nothing But The Blood,” was watched by 3.7 million viewers, making it the most-watched show on the cable network since The Sopranos finale two Junes ago. Those numbers are a marked increased over the first season premiere (up 157 percent from the September debut) and the first season finale (up 51 percent). Including the 11pm encore showing, 5.1 million total people sank their teeth into the vampire drama.

While the show certainly has a faithful fanbase, ending the first season on a big cliffhanger didn’t hurt either.Viewers were able to see if fan favorite Lafayette was the one dead in the backseat of the Andy’s car.
