The sophomore season of Reaper was also, unfortunately, the unpredicted series finale for the show. After several back and forth discussions between the CW and ABC, regarding a possible comeback, it looks as though the Reaper will never see the light of day.
The Reaper tells the story of Sam Oliver, a boy who finds out on his twenty-first birthday that his parents promised him to the devil. Sam must now work for his new father, the Devil, as a Reaper who catches Hell’s escaped souls. The show’s offbeat story would have best been served on cable instead of on the CW.
Season 2 was filled with more hilarious antics from Sam and his friends Soc and Ben. The thirteen-episode season was filled with relationship humor: Ben found love with a demon named Nina, Soc looks for love from his new sister-in-law, and Sam struggles to juggle devil life with his girlfriend Andi. It’s all outrageously funny, while leaving you with a disturbing feel of unease and disgust in your stomach as morality is tossed aside. The second season of the Reaper also features the introduction of Sam’s more devilish, albeit spoon-fed and lazy, brother.
There are a few moments that seem stolen from The Devil’s Advocate. For instance they use corporate America as the demon-driven lynchpin of evil in the world.
Unlike most shows that get prematurely cancelled on a cliffhanger, the conclusion to season 2 wraps up neatly. You’ll definitely hope for more from the series after watching it, but you won’t feel unsatisfied with how it ends.
