What is it about murder that’s just so darn funny? Weeds returned for its fifth season spearheaded by the deaths of two of Esteban’s security detail. Maybe it wouldn’t have been so funny if their killer were someone other than Cesar, Esteban’s closest confidant and overall unfunny guy. When Cesar learns that Esteban will let Nancy (Mary-Louise Parker) live, he decides to shoot his own guards so that Esteban can maintain his ‘street cred.’ “These two gossip like old women,” Cesar states flatly. And, with that episode we begin another glorious season of Weeds.

Let me first state that the person to look out for this season is Cesar. Every line and event surrounding his character in Season 5, Episode 1, has been filled with bold-dry humor. Maybe, it’s the accent. Nancy, trying to avoid a ride home with Cesar and a piano wire around the neck, suggests that Cesar needs to “process the deaths” of his two fallen guards, who he just happened to kill. Cesar replies, “I don’t need to process.” For some reason hearing the words, out of Cesar’s mouth, reminded me of “Treasure of the Sierra Madre” or “Blazing Saddles” when the gunman says, “Badges? We don’t need no stinking badges.”

Back at the Botwin household, Shane (Alexander Gould) and Silas (Hunter Parrish) are playing rock-paper-scissors for Nancy’s room – should their esteemed mother not make it back from Esteban’s lair. Nancy’s two sons have grown up into entrepreneurs. Shane has managed to setup a lucrative library-based business selling ‘Mary Jane’ to his teacher, while Silas is thinking about real estate. As for Andy, he’s emotionally stricken when Nancy returns with news of a child. His recently discovered love for Nancy has him in the kitchen trying to bake his way into her heart.

The running joke throughout “Wonderful Wonderful” was Celia’s unfriendly fan base. Celia’s daughter and boyfriend, Adolfo, have kidnapped Ms. Hodes. Now the couple is trying desperately to ransom Celia off to friends and family. Unfortunately, when you live a life like Celia, friends are one thing you don’t have. And, after a series of hysterical rejections, Celia’s daughter opts to sell her mother’s body parts on the black market. The fun doesn’t stop there. It seems Adolfo has been whipped by Celia’s daughter, and is reduced to, literally, whipping Celia’s dirty arse. It’s all very disgusting and hysterical. We’ve seen the gender role reversal joke before, but Weeds just makes it funnier. When Celia calls attention to the bruise marks on Adolfo’s face, Adolfo sadly says, “She doesn’t mean to hurt me. I make her so mad sometimes.” He eventually decides to “man up” and rebel against Celia’s daughter screaming, “You are a mean person!” Way to go Adolfo.

Weeds Season 5 is looking to be another fun season filled with laughs. Here’s hoping that the Botwin family earns themselves a few more seasons of marijuana filled highs.

    This season has been great.
And, yes Cesar is a big old pussy cat. You saw it in his eyes when he was getting the fish to chew on his feet. He enjoyed it. He just got angry because business comes first, then daintiness.

Can’t wait to see more. The opening episode was too unreal. Yeah, they are get a bit nuttier and that just makes it more fun!…I’m glad we will be seeing more of Cesar. He is scary, but I bet underneath all the scowling is a pussy cat. Right? Come on everyone has to have their soft side. Right? Right?
