The James Bond Blu-Ray collection grows larger with the recently released “Licence to Kill,” starring Timothy Dalton, from MGM Home Entertainment.
When a close friend of Bond is murdered on his wedding night, James jumps into an action to take down the drug lord responsible for his friend’s death. Unlike most Bond stories, James Bond doesn’t have the support of the British government. They’ve revoked his licence to kill, causing Bond to go rogue to satisfy his personal vendetta.
“Licence to Kill” is filled with everything you’d expect from a Bond movie, including ninjas, massive explosions and of course Bond girls. Talisa Soto and Carey Lowell play Bond’s love interests in this film. Robert Davi plays the lead Bond villain, Franz Sanchez.
As far as Bond movies go, “Licence to Kill” is hardly one of the best. Dalton’s performance feels inadequate when measured up against the likes of Sean Connery and Roger Moore. Also, Bond movies where James goes out on a personal vendetta always seem less interesting because Bond becomes overly emotional, lacking the cool exterior we’ve come to love.
Like the previously released Bond Blu-Ray releases, Licence to Kill has been brilliantly upgraded, both in picture and sound, through the Lowry process digital frame-by-frame restoration. You get a feel for how much the upgrade helped by watching the deleted scenes. The deleted scenes show several specs on the original film, as well as the rough sound mix. Unfortunately, some of the Special Features are not upgraded to High-Def. There is still a ton of bonus material included, which easily makes up for the lack of HD here.
Although, “Licence to Kill” is hardly one of the best Bond movies, it is still an entertaining Bond flick. Robert Davi’s performance as a Bond villain is stellar. I only wish he had a chance to play opposite Moore or Connery.
